Overview
The Levi laboratory has an opening for a Research Scientist
. The Levi lab’s mission is to improve the lives of people living with skin and musculoskeletal injuries and diseases through rigorous science and compassion. Current projects involve optical imaging of skin and burn wounds, using near-infrared, short wave infrared, and visible spectrum imaging to assess tissue viability in pig models and human patients. The Levi Lab is seeking a Research Scientist to join the team for at least two years.
The role includes bench and animal work related to skin injury, obtaining images from pigs and human patients, image analysis, histology, and data integration with machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms.
- Routine molecular histologic bench work with pig models and analysis of human tissues
- Collect and analyze images in the NIR and SWIR wavelengths
- Downstream data processing and image analysis
- Histology, immunofluorescent staining, confocal imaging, flow cytometry, and work with cell cultures and single-cell and bulk RNA sequencing
- Design, maintain, and troubleshoot optical imaging systems and related equipment
- Develop algorithms and use software tools for image processing and analysis
- Plan and develop standard operating protocols; review and analyze research data
- Remain current with advances in molecular biology and contribute to method development
- Prepare research findings for publication and present results at meetings and weekly lab activities
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and assist in training junior personnel
- Experience with coding and programs such as MATLAB and Python
- Ph.D. with major coursework in field of assignment and five (5) years of research experience, including at least two (2) years at the Senior Research Associate level, or
- Master's degree with major coursework and seven (7) years of research experience, including at least three (3) years at the Senior Research Associate level, or
- Bachelor's degree with major coursework and nine (9) years of research experience, including at least four (4) years at the Senior Research Associate level
- Ability to utilize various molecular biology techniques, including histology and immunohistochemistry
- Experience with animal research in pigs and with human skin research
- Experience with optical imaging and histology pipelines from tissue harvest to embedding, sectioning, staining, and confocal microscopy
- Excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills
- Data analysis and interpretation using bioinformatics tools, statistical methods, and relevant software packages
- Design, build, and maintain optical imaging systems and ensure proper calibration
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to imaging devices
- Develop algorithms and perform image processing and analysis
- Conduct histology workflows from tissue harvest to embedding, sectioning, staining, and confocal microscopy
- Plan and execute experiments to investigate molecular mechanisms
- Develop standard operating procedures for experimental protocols
- Review and analyze research data and adapt techniques as needed
- Coordinate with external groups as appropriate and maintain a respectful, inclusive laboratory environment
