Position: Registered Nurse (RN) Operating Room OR - PRN

Location:

Ambulatory Surgery Center

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Provides care to assigned patient population in accordance with established protocols and multidisciplinary plan of care utilizing independent, dependent, and interdependent interventions to restore stability, prevent complications, and achieve and maintain optimal patient responses for all patients through patient-centered/patient-valued care.

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS Education
  • Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Prefer Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Experience
  • If less than 9 months of experience, a Nurse residency is required. LVN experience does not waive this requirement. Applies to: 62100 – Operating Room, 62700 – Ambulatory Surgical Center.
Equivalent

Education and/or Experience
  • May have an equivalent experience to substitute for the education requirements.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
  • Must have current, valid RN license or temporary RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing; or, valid Compact RN license.
  • Must have current healthcare provider BLS for Healthcare Providers certification from one of the following:
    • American Heart Association
    • American Red Cross
    • Military Training Network
  • CNOR certification preferred.
Skills or Special Abilities
  • Provides care to assigned patient population in accordance with the current State of Texas Nurse Practice Act, established protocols, multidisciplinary plan of care, and clinical area specific standards.
  • Applicants must pass Medication Examination prior to hospital orientation. Current Parkland employees requesting reassignment to role must have current Medication Examination on file.
  • Provides continuous assessment, consults with other team members as required and provides nursing care that demonstrates patient-centered/patient-valued care.
  • Exercises independent judgment in providing nursing care.
  • Must be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and possess good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, families, and hospital staff in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to provide direction to non-nursing staff and serve as a preceptor.
  • Must be able to demonstrate patient-centered/patient-valued behaviors.
  • As applicable, will be required to demonstrate acceptable knowledge of nursing standards of care for specialty care area.
  • Main OR Candidates:
    Must demonstrate proficiency in 6 OR services.
  • ASC Candidates:
    Must demonstrate proficiency in 4 ASC services.
Responsibilities
  • Serves as a patient advocate, focusing on patient needs, patient rights, confidentiality, and religious and cultural preferences. Utilizes effective verbal and non-verbal communication to facilitate development of a therapeutic relationship and environment that promotes wellness. Serves as a resource for patients, families, and other healthcare team members, providing patient care, educational information, and training.
  • Maintains and implements knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact or govern perioperative nursing practice, ensuring hospital and Parkland compliance. Develops internal controls that promote adherence to state/federal laws and program requirements of accreditation agencies and private health plans. Maintains and updates knowledge of sanitation, infection control, safety, supplies, equipment, appropriate utilization of supplies and materials, and implements principles of aseptic technique.
  • Performs appropriate patient assessments, participates consistently in Universal Protocol, site marking identification, identification of appropriate clinical interventions, and skills appropriate to Operating Room assignments. Utilizes critical‑thinking skills to ensure optimal patient care in the perioperative setting. Recognizes emergency situations and takes appropriate action within scope of practice. Completes appropriate documentation and maintains accurate and timely entries and notations in patient care records and hospital documents, ensuring all records meet departmental standards and objectives.
