The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is responsible for the daily management of assigned patients in the NICU (Level III, Level IV). Direct patient care includes establishing plans of care, completing admission histories, performing expert physical examinations, procedures, orders, and daily note completion. Other responsibilities include delivering attendance at Level III NICU sites, responding to changes in patient conditions, addressing nursing concerns, upholding family centered care/education, making referrals to sub-specialists, and coordinating discharge-related care including follow-up appointments.

- Master's degree in nursing or higher and documentation of completion of an accredited Advanced Practice Education Program with graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization consistent with the clinical practice area and patient population, or
- Master’s degree graduate of a Master’s or higher ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program
- Advanced Practice RN (CPNP-CNP) focus/specialty (NNP) by Texas State Board of Nursing upon hire and authorization for prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing upon hire, or
- National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and licensed by the Texas Physician Assistant Board (PA-C) upon hire, and
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certified by the American Heart Association or Red Cross, and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics based on UT Southwestern policy for Advanced Practice Providers upon hire
- NICU provider experience preferred
- Diagnoses and treats critically ill patients, develops and manages treatment plans, and performs advanced procedures
- Develops and implements treatment plans for patients
- Conducts and documents comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological status
- Synthesizes data and utilizes evidence to develop, implement, and evaluate the patient plan of care, including ordering and interpreting laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic studies/results
- Demonstrates proficiency in technical/procedural skills as appropriate for specialty and training
- Provides management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients, families, and caregivers related to current care and preventive health measures
