Sr Registered Nurse (RN) Oncology Services Clinic - FT

Primary Purpose

The RN is a licensed professional who uses the Parkland nursing professional practice model to coordinate patient care delivery, focusing on specific patient populations or health conditions. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses patients, identifies nursing diagnoses, develops and implements individualized care plans, and evaluates patient responses. The RN utilizes knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment to assist patients through the encounter without preventable complications or delays, delegating interventions to personnel based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act and competency levels.

Minimum

Specifications Education
  • Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
Experience
  • Must have two years of nursing experience.

Certification/Registration/Licensure
  • Must have current, valid RN license or temporary RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing; or valid Compact RN license.
  • Must have current healthcare provider BLS for Healthcare Providers certification from one of the following:
    American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Military Training Network.
  • Must have Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy certificate within six months of placement in the role. Current incumbents hired prior to May 1, 2022 that are not in possession of the certificate will be expected to attain no later than May 31, 2022.
Skills or Special Abilities
  • Provides care to assigned patient population in accordance with the Texas Nurse Practice Act, protocols, multidisciplinary plans, and clinical standards.
  • Demonstrates ability to safely perform all responsibilities of Registered Nurse II – Oncology Services.
  • Comprehensive understanding of chemotherapy indications and side effects.
  • Ability to start and discontinue intravenous access and to maintain central line devices.
  • Continuous assessment, consultation with team members, and patient‑centered care.
  • Independent judgment in providing nursing care.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication.
  • Communication with patients, families, and hospital staff per policies.
  • Use of overhead paging system when required.
  • Provides direction to non‑nursing staff, serves as preceptor, and serves on rotation as a Charge Nurse.
  • Prepares and conducts in‑service educational programs.
  • Demonstrates patient‑centered behaviors.
  • Shows acceptable knowledge of nursing standards of care for specialty area.
  • Completes oncology orientation to all applicable competencies.
Responsibilities
  • Serves as a patient advocate, focusing on needs, rights, confidentiality, and cultural preferences. Maintains positive relationships with internal and external customers and acts as a resource for patients, families, and team members. May participate in community outreach activities.
  • Maintains and implements knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines, ensuring compliance with EMTALA, Order of Productive Custody, Memorandum of Transfer, and APOWW.
  • Performs patient assessments, medication administration, POC monitoring, infection control practices, and completes documentation meeting Oncology Services standards.
  • Educates patients and families on cancer care, therapies, side effects, and prevention.
  • Collaborates with wound‑care, stoma, and ENT nurses for relevant care.
  • Manages triage for patients, families, and other health professionals.
  • Seeks direction from experienced staff and participates in information exchanges within Oncology Services.
  • Identifies ways to improve work processes and patient satisfaction, making recommendations and monitoring results.
  • Serves as a preceptor or trainer to new nursing staff, and serves as a Charge Nurse on rotation as needed.
  • Stays abreast of developments and trends in nursing practice by attending seminars, reading journals, and participating in specialty organizations.
  • Maintains Texas RN licensure and any required certifications. Integrates knowledge into practice, preparing in‑service programs annually.
  • Maintains Commission on Cancer specific certification or earns continuing education nursing contract hours per cycle.
