Registered Nurse (RN) – Labor & Delivery – PRN
Location:
Main Hospital Bldg – 3rd Floor.
Provides patient-centered care to the labor and delivery population in accordance with protocols and a multidisciplinary plan of care. Utilizes independent, dependent, and interdependent interventions to restore stability, prevent complications, and achieve optimal patient responses.
Minimum Specifications- Education – Graduate from an accredited nursing school.
- Experience – Minimum 2 years Labor & Delivery experience. For nurses with less than 9 months experience a nursing residency is required; LVN experience does not waive this requirement.
- Certification/Registration/Licensure
- Current RN license or valid temporary permit (Texas Board of Nursing) or valid Compact RN license.
- Current BLS certification from AHA, Red Cross, or Military Training Network.
- ALS or ACLS certification on hire or placement.
- NRP certification on hire or placement.
- One specialty certification – AWHONN Intermediate Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certificate, Advanced Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certificate, or National Nursing Certification (NCC) Electronic Fetal Monitoring.
- Renew specialty certification every 2 years from the previous certificate’s completion date; renew AWHONN-related certifications every 3 years.
- Skills or Special Abilities
- Continuous assessment and consultation with team members.
- Independent judgment in delivering safe nursing care.
- Effective interpersonal communication – oral and written.
- Communication via overhead paging system as required.
- Direction to non‑nursing staff and role as preceptor or Charge Nurse on rotation.
- Preparation and conduct of in‑service educational programs.
- Patient‑centered behaviors and demonstration of nursing standards of care for specialty area.
- Advocates for patient needs, rights, confidentiality, and cultural preferences; maintains positive working relationships with internal and external customers.
- Provides patient education and training; may participate in community outreach activities.
- Performs continuous patient assessments, monitors changes, and provides appropriate interventions; consults and implements orders promptly.
- Provides care to high‑risk obstetric patients during antepartum, postpartum, and perioperative phases; supports breastfeeding and newborn education; manages IV access and pain; provides neonatal resuscitation.
- Maintains accurate documentation and timely entries in patient care records.
- Directs non‑nursing staff and exchanges information with cross‑disciplinary team members; provides hand‑off communications.
- Preceptor or trainer to newer nursing staff; conducts annual in‑service education.
- Identifies and implements improvements to work processes to enhance customer satisfaction.
- Stays current on latest field developments; attends seminars, reads professional journals, and maintains certifications.
- Maintains knowledge of applicable regulations and develops internal controls to promote compliance.
- Other duties as assigned.
