Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and proven Senior Director of Development to lead our foundation, corporate and major gifts fundraising efforts. As a key member of HRI’s senior leadership team, the Senior Director manages a significant revenue portfolio and plays an essential role in successfully building and stewarding relationships critical to HRI’s long-term success.

The Senior Director will work closely with the Executive Director, Board Members, grants and our program team to cultivate partnerships, secure major gifts, and grow philanthropic revenue in alignment with HRI’s short and long-term plans.

Annual Fundraising Goals
  • Foundation Giving: $550,000+
  • Corporate Giving: $150,000+
  • Major Individual Gifts: $350,000+
  • Events/Campaigns/Other: $50,000–$100,000

In the first 6 months

  • Meet with HRI’s top 5 donors (mix of foundations, corporations, individuals)
  • Secure meetings with at least 10 new prospective major donors
  • Spend at least 30 hours with the legal services team, especially during client meetings to deepen understanding of our work and the clients we serve
  • Master HRI’s CRM system, identify inefficiencies and optimize its use

The ideal candidate will demonstrate proven success through strong development related references and a clear record of results.

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Fundraising Leadership

  • Proactively develop, lead and execute a thoughtful multi-year fundraising roadmap
  • Successfully build and manage a portfolio of major donors ($10,000+) across foundations, corporations, and individuals leveraging deep experience of moves management strategies
  • Consistently utilize donor prospecting techniques and technology to garner new support and engagement
  • Efficiently utilize CRM system to gather and analyze data to identify trends that help direct efforts, highlight successes, and prompt improvement
  • Consistently track fundraising performance and prepare regular reports for Executive Director and Board
  • Provide effective leadership and management supporting a culture of accountability

Foundation Relations (Goal: $550,000 annually)

  • Collaborate with the grants team to proactively research, cultivate, and steward foundation donors
  • Support high-quality grant submissions as needed
  • Steward existing foundation funders through timely updates, reports, and relationship management.
  • Significantly expand HRI’s pipeline of foundation support through proactive prospecting and relationship-building

Corporate Giving (Goal: $150,000 annually)

  • Develop and grow corporate partnerships, with a special focus on law firms providing or interested in providing Pro Bono support
  • Build multi-year giving commitments with corporate partners
  • Collaborate with HRI team members to engage corporate partners through events (CLEs, clinics, volunteer activities, customized giving opportunities)

Major Individual Gifts (Goal: $350,000 annually)

  • Effectively manage a portfolio of major donors through tailored cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
  • Make a minimum of 10 asks within first year after careful prospecting and cultivation of potential donors with an affinity for our work.
  • Collaborate with Executive Director and Board leadership to leverage peer networks and connections.

Campaigns and Event Support (Goal: $50,000–$100,000 annually)
