Sr. UPS Battery Technician

Job Summary

The SR. UPS Battery Technician will be responsible for assisting sales in engineering jobs, estimating projects and installation of critical power systems for UPS, switch gear, and telecommunications. It is responsible for completing all projects on time and on budget in accordance with IEEE and manufacturer specifications. Responsibilities include preparing Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) reports for all projects and conducting safety toolbox meetings on site.

This position also assists in training battery technicians to become Sr. Battery Technicians and represents Viking Power; it requires professionalism, a great attitude, effective communication skills and outstanding customer service.

Essential Functions
  • Communicate with suppliers about warranty, sizing, safety, and maintenance issues.
  • Physically remove and replace batteries, spill containment, racks and prepare spent batteries for shipment to a smelter in accordance with DOT/EPA requirements.
  • Accurately size batteries while considering space, temperature, maintenance, and performance.
  • Evaluate and recommend EHS equipment necessary to comply with EPA, DOT & OSHA in battery rooms.
  • Run Alber Cell order and Alber BCT capacity tester on batteries for evaluation.
  • Achieve FPY (First Pass Yield) by properly evaluating projects and having all necessary tools, material, and equipment to complete the job on the first visit.
  • Keep inventory of all inventories for a project.
  • Perform all charger repairs and preventive maintenance (P.M.) on chargers and battery systems.
  • Clean and neutralize batteries, as necessary.
  • Properly water batteries.
  • Perform periodic maintenance and repairs.
  • Notify supervisor of equipment not working properly.
  • Package and dispose of used acids and batteries in accordance with DOT/EPA and OSHA regulations.
  • Train helpers/junior techs to become Sr. Technicians.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 5+ years of experience working on batteries.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a crew with on‑time performance.
  • Proven safety record, experienced in LOTO procedure and JHA’s.
  • Preference for P&L responsibility.
  • Excellent written communication and people skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Excel, Word & Adobe Acrobat.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Working knowledge of electrical circuits & electronics.
  • Ability to decipher blueprints and build out according to plans or red line as needed.
  • Must perform JHA’s at customer sites.

Physical Demands

Sitting, standing, and walking (up to continuously); frequent use of computer and telephone requiring repetitive finger, hand, and arm movement; occasionally carry office supplies and other miscellaneous items up to 50 pounds. Continuous use of seeing, hearing, and verbal communication.

Working Conditions

Work indoors and outdoors; exposure to temperatures commensurate with outdoor seasonal temperatures.
