Position: 0000005265.ATTORNEY III.PUBLIC DEFENDER

Performs legal assignments with minimum supervision and may be assisted by Attorneys I and II. Work is performed under general directions with authority to make tactical and legal decisions in connection with providing a full range of legal services to indigent defendants in the assigned misdemeanor, felony, family, juvenile, or mental health cases, including case evaluation, legal advice, plea negotiations, representation in jury trials, non‑jury hearings, plea offers, and dismissals.

Responsibilities include communicating with clients, judges, prosecutors, and court personnel, conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, interpreting laws, rules, and regulations; and receiving oversight, training, and supervision based on experience.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluates cases by reviewing documentation, conducting legal research, interviewing clients and witnesses, gathering evidence, preparing investigative requests, and determining appropriate actions.
  • Interviews clients to discuss facts, potential defenses, and applicable laws and procedures.
  • Explains legal process to potential witnesses, prepares them for testimony, and keeps clients informed on case status.
  • Drafts, files, and responds to motions, briefs, and other legal documents for trial and hearing.
  • Collects, prepares, reviews, and presents evidence, exhibits, and related material for trial or hearing.
  • Represents clients in trial and applicable hearings, including jury selection, opening statements, direct and cross‑examinations, and closing arguments.
  • Participates in plea‑bargain negotiations, prepares required documents, and secures necessary signatures.
  • Documents client files, prepares trial notebook, and maintains statistical information on caseload and dispositions.
  • Trains or assists in training Attorneys I and II.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited law school and license to practice law in the State of Texas. One (1) year of experience practicing law required.
