Advanced Practice Provider, Oncology Palliative Care Clinic
The Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC), a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center affiliated with UT Southwestern Medical Center, is looking for an experienced Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner (Advanced Practice Provider, “APP”) to join our outpatient team in the Palliative Care clinic. This is a general outpatient palliative care clinic serving patients with a wide range of serious illnesses, including oncologic and non-oncologic conditions.
While a significant proportion of patients have cancer, the clinic is not limited to oncology palliative care.
Mon-Fri, 8:00 a.m.
-5:00 p.m.
- Conducts and documents comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological status.
- Synthesizes data and utilizes evidence to develop, implement, and evaluate the patient plan of care, including ordering and interpreting laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic studies/results.
- Demonstrates proficiency in technical/procedural skills, as appropriate based on specialty and training.
- Provides relevant management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients, families and caregivers related to current care and preventive health measures.
- Facilitates/participates in quality related initiatives through planned group processes, workshops, seminars, and staff meetings, to improve clinical and system practice performance.
- Collaborates in research projects and protocols; and routinely applies evidence based best practices to patient care.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Experience and Education
- Education:
Master’s degree or higher in nursing (advanced practice) with completion of an accredited Advanced Practice Education Program. Or graduate of a Master’s degree or higher ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Education:
- Licenses and Certifications
- Licensure as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by Texas State Board of Nursing with authorization for prescriptive authority, OR licensed by the Texas Physician Assistant Board. AND
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (American Heart Association or Red Cross per UT Southwestern policy).
- Experience as an APP in palliative care and/or oncology and willingness to obtain palliative care certification.
- Complex symptom management, including pain symptoms.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Comfortable caring for patients with serious and life-limiting illness.
- Ability to lead goals of care discussion.
- Knowledgeable with hospice services and coordinate transitions of care.

Education
- Master's degree or higher in nursing, with documentation of completion of an accredited Advanced Practice Education Program; or a Master's degree or higher from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program.
Licenses and Certifications
- Texas APRN licensure with prescriptive authority; OR Texas PA licensure with applicable prescriptive authority.
- ACLS certification as described above.
