What does the Laboratory Services Manager do?Responsible for the efficient operation of multiple laboratory facilities. Ensures smooth running, accurate, timely patient results, and compliance with all state and federal regulations. Develops and monitors testing, maintains quality laboratory testing and results, and supports compliance with the Texas Oncology Compliance Program.
Responsibilities- Direct the performance of multiple laboratories through scheduling, work prioritization, and supervision.
- Act as a technical supervisor, performing routine tests and developing knowledge of complex tests.
- Supervise laboratory personnel, evaluate qualifications, interview, hire, and provide ongoing training.
- Establish and monitor quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, and routine maintenance policies.
- Develop test methods, write new procedures, and maintain a current procedure manual.
- Maintain a quality control program with appropriate analytic performance parameters.
- Review patient test results, quality control, and proficiency testing records; ensure corrective actions are taken.
- Maintain awareness of state and federal regulations regarding laboratory operations and licensing.
- Enforce safety standards, maintain employee health records when mandated, and enforce OSHA regulations.
- Order supplies and equipment, evaluate new equipment and reagents for technical suitability and cost effectiveness, and perform cost analysis on major purchases.
- Analyze the true cost of providing individual tests and other laboratory services; recommend pricing based on analysis.
- Monitor and evaluate laboratory testing reimbursement.
- Interface with laboratory vendors and contractors to develop relationships and cost effective pricing.
- Maintain confidentiality of all patient and medical staff information.
- Perform laboratory budgeting and cost analysis.
- Assist in budgeting, cost analysis, marketing, and managed care contracts for the practice.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of applicable labor laws.
- Interface with other disciplines (nursing, clerical) to ensure efficient operation.
- Participate in practice strategic planning and committees as required.
- Act as a resource for laboratory related information to other disciplines.
- Maintain laboratory‑specific personnel file.
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related science field.
- Minimum seven years experience in laboratory testing, including at least five years in a supervisory capacity.
- ASCP or equivalent certification required.
- Current state licensure as required.
Full range of body motion, manual and finger dexterity, eye‑hand coordination, sitting/standing for extensive periods, occasional lifting up to 40 lbs., corrected vision and color perception, and legible handwriting.
Work EnvironmentOffice environment, significant interaction with management, staff, and external auditors and clients; frequent air or automobile travel, approximately 70% of the workweek.
