JOB SUMMARY

Works under general direction to provide responsible and skilled technical assistance in performing assignments requiring experience and good knowledge of techniques and practices related to particular field of medical and scientific research. After theoretical and practical training and under the direction of the principal investigator, the Research Assistant performs research involving the ongoing analysis of mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.

The Research Technician assists in the molecular, biochemical, anatomical and physiological analysis under supervision and presents completed study to the principal investigator. The Research Technician will be expected to perform studies with general supervision and be expected to assist with the maintenance of the laboratory including laboratory equipment and the mouse colony. Ideally, candidates will be able to commit for at least 2 years in the laboratory.

Position

Activities
  • Responsible for mouse models that include maintenance of mouse colonies, breeding and genotyping and includes participation in tissue and biospecimen collection, extraction of DNA/RNA/protein, molecular work such as cloning, plasmid isolation, PCR and RT-PCR, gel electrophoresis (Southern, Northern or Western blot analysis as needed).
  • Performs and analyzes physiological, behavioral and anatomical experiments in mouse models.
  • Performs immunohistochemical studies on animal tissues.
  • Performs ELISA/immunoassays on human and animal biospecimen samples as necessary.
  • Uses PC/Mac computers to perform database collection, data analysis, graphing and maintains accurate records, reports and statistics.
  • Maintains instruments using appropriate standards and methods to insure meaningful results.
  • Maintains laboratory reagents and supplies. Maintains inventory and orders supplies as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
