Position: Recovery Support Peer

Job Location: Dallas, TX 75241

  • The primary purpose of your job position is to provide support services to peers with mental health and substance use disorders, function as a role model to peers, serve as a peer advocate, and provide information and support for peers in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Assist and guide participants towards the identification and achievement of specific goals defined by the peer in the treatment/recovery plan.
  • Peer specialists promote community socialization, recovery, self-advocacy, self-help, and development of natural support.
  • Assist in the orientation process for peers receiving mental health or co-occurring disorder services.
  • Educate and engage individuals in the Wellness Recovery Action Plan process as a means to recognize triggers and signs of relapse.
  • Accompany peers as they transition to community integration and continue the process towards their recovery goals.
  • Provide education and advocacy in the community to promote awareness of mental health disorders while recognizing both the successes and challenges the disorders can present.
  • Participate in treatment team discussions about individuals served and provide insight to the team about strengths, accomplishments, and obstacles in the recovery process.
  • Complete all required documentation in a timely, legible manner.
  • Utilize a nonjudgmental approach, effective listening, good eye contact, and positive interactions with peers.
  • Provide instruction and support to peers in the development of coping skills.
  • Interact with every peer on the crisis residential unit.
  • Assist peers on the crisis residential unit with their discharge plan and reintegration into the community.
  • Facilitate life skills groups on the crisis residential unit as scheduled with a minimum of one a week.
  • Assist peers in residential substance use treatment with their discharge plan and reintegration into the community.
  • Be available by phone to provide peer support.
  • Follow up with peers after discharge and maintain contact and support.
  • Initiate and maintain chart documentation on each peer.
  • Develop a working knowledge of housing options and resources and increase collaborative relationships with staff connected with each option.
  • Maintain a valid Texas driver’s license and vehicle liability insurance.
  • Transport peers to medical appointments, job sites, meetings, social activities, discharge locations, and other places as needed.
  • Assist peers in acquiring their birth certificate, social security card, identification card, and other documentation.
  • Assist peers in preparing for interviews and acquiring jobs.
  • Participate in in-service programs and attend all annual trainings in a timely manner.
  • Be prepared to therapeutically intervene in potential crisis situations.
  • Be adept in working with peers who have experienced significant amounts of trauma.
  • Maintain credentials required for job functions.
  • Maintain current CPR and First Aid training.
  • Be tested annually for tuberculosis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Any other tasks assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
  • High School or GED Required
  • Currently Driver’s License
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • If in Recovery, at least two (2) years continuous sobriety required.
Knowledge and Ability
  • Possess good oral and written communication skills.
  • Observe client confidentiality requirements.
  • Adhere to facility Policies and Procedures.
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal relationship skills with clients and staff members.
  • Perform assigned duties and responsibilities in a timely manner.
  • Possess the ability to control problem situations in a calm and directive manner.
  • Possess the ability to establish and maintain rapport with the clients.
  • Possess the ability to motivate, confront, and self-disclose in appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrate warmth, realness and empathy.
  • Willing to upgrade knowledge and skills through continued education and training.
