Job Summary

The Advanced Practice Sonographer (APS) functions as a physician extender, working under the delegated authority of supervising physicians. The successful candidate will focus on providing advanced clinical sonography services at Ambulatory Maternal Fetal Medicine clinic and/or associated outpatient/clinic imaging centers.

Experience and Education
  • Associate’s degree in biology, physiology, or related field
  • 6 years of full‑time clinical ultrasound experience, including at least 3 years performing advanced procedures; extensive clinical experience in providing sonography services and mentoring staff sonographers; proficiency with computer skills and imaging software for viewing, interpretation, documentation, and report generation
  • Licensing and certifications: AMER REGIS DIAG MED SONO registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography upon hire; advanced certification in abdominal, neurological, vascular, obstetrics and gynecology, or other area of specialization as dictated by unit or standard of care; BLS (Basic Life Support) course accredited by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross prior to hire/placement
Maintenance of Qualifications
  • Maintain proficiency in at least three advanced ultrasound techniques (e.g., peripheral vascular, 3‑D ultrasound, CEUS, elastography, musculoskeletal)
  • Attend faculty‑led ultrasound‑specific lectures, journal clubs, staff meetings; 50% of ultrasound quality improvement and clinical journal club meetings; other conferences as needed
  • Maintain 10 CME hours per year
Job Duties
  • Primary Duties
    • Review ultrasound images with sonographers for appropriateness, image quality, and protocol completion.
    • Review patient clinical history for billing and completeness.
    • Review prior relevant reports and images.
    • Provide scanning assistance for technically challenging exams; authorize patient release or rescans.
    • Provide real‑time quality assurance feedback and coordinate departmental quality‑improvement initiatives.
    • Synthesize sonography examination results and prepare draft reports.
    • Assist with new sonographer onboarding and trainee education.
    • Communicate new service line and protocol changes to ultrasound staff and providers.
    • Participate in advanced techniques such as contrast‑enhanced, 3‑D, and musculoskeletal ultrasound.
    • Coordinate guided procedures and search for relevant history and lab values.
    • Facilitate clinical and translational research activities.
    • Perform additional advanced sonography services delegated by supervising physician.
  • Secondary Duties
    • Demonstrate patient‑centered/patient‑valued behaviors; assume responsibility for patient safety while in the ultrasound department.
