Breast Sonographer – All About Ultrasound
We’re looking for a Breast Sonographer to operate ultrasound equipment for high-quality diagnostic scans while ensuring optimal patient care.
Responsibilities- Operate ultrasound equipment to produce general diagnostic scans, ensuring optimal patient care and equipment safety.
- Determine equipment and supply needs in advance for scans, maintaining safety and efficiency.
- Participate in complex scans and invasive procedures as needed for credential and career development.
- Evaluate images to meet departmental standards and protocols, handling image acquisition, labeling, documentation, and PACS presentation.
- Identify normal and abnormal anatomy, documenting findings in images and electronic health records.
- Maintain quality standards through Peer View and department metrics; participate in image review with physicians and supervisors.
- Observe patients during scans, ensuring safety, assessing urgent events, and obtaining emergency assistance when needed.
- Accurate data entry into patient records, including arrival, exam start and finish, and charging information.
- Access and handle selected medications and contrast media under supervision.
- Troubleshoot ultrasound equipment, submit tickets, and ensure broken equipment is removed from service.
- Inspect, clean, and prepare exam rooms after each patient; participate in infection prevention and Environment of Care rounds.
- Assist in training sonography students on clinical rotations.
- Develop positive working relationships following Parkland behavior guidelines; act as resource for physicians, staff, and patients.
- Assist with orientation and onboarding of new sonographers, APP staff, support staff, and resident physicians.
- Adhere to behavioral expectations, achieving no written corrective actions or significant improvement.
- Attend department meetings and continuing education sessions (waived only by manager discretion).
- Graduate from an accredited sonography program.
- For sonographers in Ultrasound or Mammography, no experience required; one year of specialty experience preferred.
Education and/or Experience
- Completed sonography education with current credential from ARDMS or ARRT(S) and hospital sonography experience.
- Sonographers in Mammography (70550) must be registered with ARDMS or hold ARRT.
- ARDMS holders must obtain RDMS(BR) within 12 months of hire.
- ARRT(M) holders must obtain BS sub-specialty as a condition of hire.
- Must hold a current BLS Level CPR Course Completion Card or obtain certification during initial orientation at Parkland from one of the following:
American Heart Association, American Red Cross Rescuer, Military Training Network.
- Operate various types of ultrasound and ancillary equipment.
- Demonstrate knowledge of normal and abnormal anatomy.
- Proficiency in breast ultrasound exams for mammography sonographers.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate patient-centered/patient-valued behaviors.
- Identify ways to improve work processes and customer satisfaction; make recommendations, implement, and monitor results.
- Stay abreast of latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field through seminars, journals, and professional organizations; integrate knowledge into current work practices.
- Maintain knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines; develop internal controls to promote adherence and seek guidance as needed.
