Required Experience and Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 3 years of acute hospital‑based coding experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Licenses and

    Certifications:
    • RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician)
    • CCS (Certified Coding Specialist)
    • COC (Certified Outpatient Coder) or CPC (Certified Professional Coder)
    • APR and other related credentials as applicable
Preferred Experience
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management or related field
  • Experience working in a remote environment (required for PRN Coders)
  • Specialty coding experience in ED, wound care, pain management, or radiology procedures is preferred
Job Duties
  • Code retrospective outpatient accounts using ICD‑10 CM and CPT in compliance with official coding guidelines
  • Identify appropriate Reason for Visit, Primary Diagnosis, Procedures, Modifiers, and all secondary diagnoses to support medical necessity
  • Abstract required data elements such as discharge disposition, discharge destination, procedure dates, physician(s), occurrence codes, and other designated data
  • Review accounts in denials work queues and make recommendations to the Coding Manager
  • Determine when physician queries are necessary, route queries appropriately, and complete final coding when documentation is available
  • Maintain quality and productivity standards set by UTSW/HIM Coding
  • Mentor and train on designated coding service lines as requested to ensure quality
  • Maintain expert knowledge of coding guidelines and best practices
  • Perform other duties as assigned
