Summary

This job is responsible for accurate interpretation via face‑to‑face, phone, or video of health care information to and from Spanish‑speaking patients/family and health care providers, as well as other specialties involved in patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Accurately interpret medical and health care information/instructions from physicians, nurses, or other health care staff to Spanish‑speaking patients/families in consecutive or simultaneous mode, following the National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care and departmental standards.
  • Assist in obtaining patients/families’ signatures where appropriate; provide information regarding health care related cultural issues/needs of Spanish‑speaking patients/families to hospital staff to develop sensitivity.
  • Manage and keep accurate information for each encounter in the Language Access Services EPIC scheduling system.
  • Assist with varying departmental activities and projects as requested by department leadership; perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Provide occasional services outside of normal working hours on an as‑needed basis and/or for staff meetings and continuous education.
  • Ability to meet physical and non‑physical demands as outlined in the job description is an essential function of this job.
Work Experience

At least 1 year job‑related experience or a bachelor's degree in Interpretation/Translation is required.

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent (Required)
  • Two‑year associate’s degree or equivalent experience (Preferred)
  • 40‑hour or more of health care, community, or legal interpreter training (Preferred)
Licenses and Certifications

Certified Healthcare Interpreter from the CCHI (Certified Commission for Healthcare Interpreters) or Certified Medical Interpreter from the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters. One year of experience required.

  • Candidates must successfully complete a phone screening and a skills assessment to demonstrate proficiency in medical‑level interpretation.
