Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval—award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years)—are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services Program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Must be a U.S. Citizen. English proficiency required.
  • Education:

    Doctoral degree in psychology from an accredited program (APA/CPA) or a doctoral degree in any area of psychology with successful completion of a re‑specialization program (including an approved internship) in an accredited doctoral program.
  • Internship:
    Completed a professional psychology internship program accredited by APA or CPA, or new VHA internship programs in process of APA accreditation, or a VHA-sanctioned pre‑doctoral internship.
  • Licensure:
    Full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State/Territory/Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Grade:
    Eligibility determined by required experience (none for GS‑11, one year for GS‑12, two years for GS‑13) and demonstration of KSAs.
  • Additional selected experience includes crisis intervention, safety planning, case management, substance abuse psychotherapy, psychological assessment, and experience with a veteran population.
  • Physical requirements:

    moderate lifting up to 44 pounds, moderate carrying up to 44 pounds, pushing for 1/2 hour, walking/standing 3 hours, repeated bending 1 hour, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination, near vision correctable at 13 to 16 inches, hearing (aid may be permitted).
Duties
  • Serve as the Staff Psychologist on a Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (SARRTP) to provide a wide array of psychological services to Veterans expressing complex psychosocial stress, mental health diagnoses, and substance use disorders.
  • Provide a full range of therapeutic interventions for a SARRTP team including time‑limited individual therapy, process and time‑limited group therapy, and psychoeducation.
  • Use cognitive and behavioral therapy approaches with an emphasis on time‑limited evidence‑based treatments.
  • Monitor patient progress using Measurement‑Based Care principles and adjust treatment as needed.
  • Administer and interpret a variety of psychological assessment tools; conduct psychological interviews, testing, and assessment skills for seriously mentally ill patients and other conditions.
  • Respond to patient crisis situations in a timely manner, provide suicide risk assessment and safety planning, and triage patients at elevated risk.
  • Consult with medical center staff regarding patient care issues; communicate effectively with other disciplines and treatment providers.
  • Participate in team‑related activities, including attendance of team/program meetings, monthly psychology staff meetings, and peer review procedures.
  • Provide coverage on weather & safety leave days, holidays, and weekends.
  • Maintain competence in a variety of modalities to treat substance use disorders and other mental disorders; incorporate new clinical procedures.
  • Assist with research activities, including designing and implementing clinical research projects if assigned to a research job.
