What does the MLT position do?The Medical Lab Technician is responsible for accurately performing specimen analysis, instrument maintenance, and quality control procedures. Duties include moderate and high‑complexity laboratory tests, specimen collection, and patient flow support. The role adheres to the U.S. Oncology Compliance Program and related ethics and business standards.
Responsibilities- Assist with phlebotomy and collection of specimens as ordered, ensuring proper consent and authorization.
- Conduct special procedures such as bone marrow collection when required.
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting, and record maintenance.
- Perform analysis of Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology specimens.
- Maintain and operate laboratory equipment, performing daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance.
- Document quality control activities, calibrations, and maintenance, recording lot numbers.
- Participate in proficiency testing by analyzing samples and reporting results at least annually.
- Prepare peripheral blood smears and perform complete WBC differentials.
- Examine urinary sediment microscopically.
- Record results and perform file maintenance in the computer system.
- Address test system deviations, document corrective actions, and notify supervisors.
- Keep accessioning logs, test report logs, QC logs, equipment records, and checklists.
- Verify critical results and manage follow‑up documentation.
- Maintain inventory, prepare reagents and stains, and restock laboratory supplies.
- Process in‑house and send‑out results for charting.
- Chart patient results promptly.
- Properly identify and band patients for blood product transfusion.
- Adhere to OSHA, universal precaution procedures, and regulatory agency standards.
- Dispose of hazardous materials safely and maintain a clean workspace.
- Protect patient confidentiality.
- Perform CLIA‑classified waived and moderately complex testing.
- May work under the supervision of a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist.
Level 1 (Entry Level):
- Associate’s degree in medical technology, laboratory science, or related field.
- Current state license if required.
- AMT, ASCP, or equivalent certification preferred.
Level 2 (Requires 3 years of experience):
- Three years of professional experience in medical laboratory technology.
Level Sr (Requires 5 years of experience):
- Five years of professional experience in medical laboratory technology.
Requires full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity, eye‑hand coordination, and occasional lifting up to 40 lb. Requires sitting/standing for extended periods, vision, color perception, hearing within normal range, and legible handwriting.
Work EnvironmentWork is performed in an office environment with significant interaction with staff, auditors, and clients. Frequent travel by air or automobile is expected, approximately 70% of the workweek.
