State and Local Tax Manager - Indirect Tax
Join us as a State and Local Tax Manager (Indirect Tax) at Baker Tilly US. This role focuses on consulting and hands‑on tax planning for a growing state & local tax practice.
OverviewBaker Tilly is a leading advisory, tax and assurance firm with a coast‑to‑coast presence. The State & Local Tax (SALT) practice serves clients across the U.S. and delivers comprehensive services in income, franchise, sales & use, real & personal property, unclaimed property and voluntary disclosure.
Responsibilities- Act as a trusted advisor to mid‑market and Fortune 500 clients, providing strategic state and local tax compliance and consulting that reduces tax burden.
- Manage multi‑disciplinary, multi‑state reviews of income, franchise, sales & use, payroll, valorem and other taxes; identify exemptions, credits and incentives.
- Research state tax issues including nexus determinations, taxability analyses, and quantify potential liabilities.
- Counsel clients on controversies, audit defense, drafting correspondence and ruling requests.
- Lead tax projects—due diligence, voluntary disclosure, and other advisory initiatives.
- Prepare technical memoranda for individuals, corporations, partnerships and LLCs.
- Maintain client communication, recommend process improvements and manage client expectations.
- Lead a team of staff and seniors on engagements, ensuring successful staffing, billing and profitability.
- Build relationships internally and externally, networking and representing Baker Tilly in the community.
- Invest in professional development through firm‑wide learning and support of team members.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; master’s or advanced degree preferred.
- CPA, CMI or JD/LLM required.
- Five (5)+ years of state and local tax experience in a professional services environment.
- Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience, mentoring associates.
- Strong leadership, client service, ethical, best‑practice, and time‑management skills.
- Eligibility to work in the U.S. without sponsorship preferred.
Compensation range: $115,710 to $205,842. Actual pay depends on skill, experience, qualifications and geographic location.
