Summary

Balfour Beatty is seeking a Senior Vice President of US Tax to lead tax support for all of our activities in North America. The SVP of US Tax is responsible for staff development of the US tax team. This individual also acts as a director on the board of various Balfour Beatty US holding companies. Balfour Beatty operates within three distinct divisions in the US (with some activities provided on a shared service basis across the three), and the SVP of US Tax works closely with the US-based leadership of all three divisions.

The US tax team includes nine staff members based in Woodcliff Lake, NJ, and three staff members based in Dallas, TX, where the majority of Balfour Beatty’s finance shared service team are.

Our US business is split into three divisions as follows:

US Buildings:
Our US Buildings business generates $4 billion in annual revenue building offices, hotels, schools, airport terminals, federal buildings and other complex vertical construction projects. The business is split into six geographies based in Oregon, California, Texas, the Carolinas, Florida (including Georgia) and the Mid Atlantic.

US Civils:
Our US Civils business generates $600 million annually from constructing roads and bridges in the Carolinas and Texas and rail projects nationally. We own a traction power manufacturing facility and a share of the O&M operation supporting the Denver Eagle light rail system. Much of the work in our civils business is self-performed via weekly paid craft labor.

US Investments:
Our US Investments business is one of the largest owners and operators of family housing on US military bases nationally. With over 40,000 family houses on more than 50 US military bases across the country, we have a large and dispersed workforce managing these properties. We also develop, invest in and maintain student housing in the US and have a multi-family housing development and renovation business.

Essential Functions

• Deliver tax support to our US businesses, ensuring we comply with our legal obligations related to tax, while generating and implementing opportunities to maximize tax credits and reliefs and minimize tax expense within the tax strategy set by Balfour Beatty plc.

• Provide tax support to new business activities in each of our three US businesses. This includes growing our business into new geographies within the US, working with new JV partners, bidding on new project opportunities and overseeing M&A activities for our US Investments business in particular.

• Offer tax support for the disposal of JV investments and businesses within the US, working with JV partners, staff of US businesses and outside tax advisors.

• Preparation and submission of all federal and state tax returns, extensions and payments. Balfour Beatty currently files approximately 300 income tax returns in US states and cities and is the tax representative for 77 partnership returns. In addition, compliance includes extensions and quarterly tax filings.

• Preparation of current and deferred tax accounting for inclusion in both the Balfour Beatty worldwide consolidated accounts (IFRS) and consolidated and stand-alone accounts for various US entities (US GAAP and IFRS).

• Preparation and submission of all indirect tax returns including sales and use tax, property tax, franchise tax returns and business license returns.

• Management of all tax audits in the US and Canada.

• Conducts tax risk assurance reviews for indirect and payroll tax purposes.

• Management of the US tax risk register.

• Oversees the management of Canadian tax compliance activities (undertaken by external advisers) covering our legacy Canadian entities.
