Mechanical Engineering Design Manager – Data Center Colo – Dallas TX

This opportunity is working directly with a leading mission‑critical data center developer / wholesaler / colo provider. The company provides turnkey data center solutions custom‑fit to the requirements of their client’s ever‑changing mission‑critical facility’s operational needs. They accomplish this by providing reliability of mission‑critical facilities for many of the world’s largest organizations (Hyperscale and Enterprise Customers). This challenging and unique role will involve directing the design of HVAC / Cooling / Mechanical Equipment for new data centers and expansions to existing data centers. The ideal candidate will have past experience designing mechanical systems specifically for large data centers, including heating and cooling load calculations, ductwork and piping sizing, HVAC equipment selection, energy modeling, and system design and installation.

Previous experience with electrical equipment design—including generators, UPS systems, and electrical switch gear—is a plus. The candidate will lead and manage the design of critical, high‑impact components, collaborate cross‑functionally with multiple teams, promote best practices, identify emerging technologies, and implement continuous improvement initiatives. The role requires strong communication with all trades and stakeholders and a proven track record as a consulting engineer.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage projects, create designs and plans, gather specifications, and execute assignments in a multidisciplinary electrical and mechanical engineering design role for small to medium‑sized data center facility design projects.
  • Create conceptual designs gathered from meetings.
  • Manage multiple projects; champion design reports; produce engineering proposals (RFPs); facilitate client meetings and presentations that meet the company’s and project’s objectives.
  • Establish project objectives, policies, procedures, and performance standards within the boundaries of company policy, and communicate them clearly to the field.
  • Review drawings and specifications, participate in equipment selection, and provide input to the design team; perform peer review as needed.
  • Represent the Operations team in startup, testing, factory witness testing, commissioning, and turnover; support the commissioning manager as needed.
  • Ensure design and construction focus on operability and maintainability.
  • Develop guidelines and standards for operational processes; provide input to the development of design standards.
  • Track progress of projects against goals, objectives, timelines, and budgets.
  • Develop and administer an ‘Operations and Maintenance’ audit program.
  • Lead After‑Action Reviews and incorporate lessons learned into policies.
  • Provide subject‑matter expertise on critical systems maintenance and operations; assist with troubleshooting issues as needed.
  • Provide on‑site support during major maintenance activities if required.
  • Ensure proper procedures are written and reviewed before such activities.
  • Manage a team of engineers and technical staff.
Qualifications:
  • 5‑10+ years of experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field.
  • Licensed PE / EIT is a plus.
  • Prior experience at an engineering consulting firm is a must.
  • Experience with hyperscale or colo data center design.
  • Must have experience managing an engineering design team.
  • Experience with Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, or BIM is a plus.
  • Experience working on complex data center / mission‑critical facilities design projects is a must.
  • Experience with mechanical systems (HVAC, CFD, boilers, chillers, pumps, CRAC/CRAH units, air handling units, etc.) is a must.
  • Experience with electrical systems such as UPS, generators, switchgears, and batteries is a plus.
  • Experience in operational handover of mission‑critical facilities.
  • Experience developing design, commissioning, and operational standards and guidelines.
