Lead Mechanical Engineer – Buildings
WSP is seeking a Lead Mechanical – Buildings for our Dallas, TX office. Join our Property & Buildings – Mechanical Team to contribute to projects that meet client objectives and solve challenging engineering problems.
Responsibilities- Provide guidance with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings for project development, design, and construction.
- Apply high‑level mechanical engineering techniques to identify improvements for concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
- Conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, and mechanical systems to ensure conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
- Develop construction and installation plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare safety and phasing plans and update infrastructure layout plans in coordination with owners and other disciplines.
- Manage mechanical design and construction from inception to completion, including rehabilitation, reconstruction, new builds, operating specifications, phasing, and safety plans.
- Incorporate advanced technologies and modeling techniques to ensure proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems.
- Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance for HVAC, hydronic, and plumbing systems.
- Oversee cross‑functional teams, manage budgets, track hours and expenses, and prepare technical documentation.
- Coordinate, review, and approve installation design plans to ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
- Prepare data visualizations, reports, sketches, calculations, and technical drawings for presentation of complex data.
- Write comprehensive technical reports and presentations to explain research, concepts, and recommendations.
- Analyze and interpret data from field investigations, develop action plans for risk mitigation.
- Develop and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
- Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients professionally.
- Collaborate on federal, state, and local improvement projects and business development opportunities.
- Maintain current knowledge of mechanical engineering techniques and practices.
- Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- 7–10 years of relevant post‑education experience in mechanical design.
- Engineer license required.
- Proficiency in mechanical engineering principles, process, and project‑related applications.
- Extensive knowledge of building and infrastructure design.
- Experience with planning, design, and construction management of rehabilitation and new build projects.
- Knowledge of reducing hazardous substances and greenhouse gas emissions.
- Comprehensive understanding of mechanical engineering laws, codes, and compliance practices.
- Strong analytical and computational skills for engineering calculations.
- Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on construction and design.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- High level of self‑leadership, attention to detail, and multitasking in a dynamic environment.
- Independent work with minimal oversight while guiding junior team members.
- Proficiency in technical writing, office automation, load calculations, and design software (e.g., AutoCAD, CAM).
- Critical thinking and problem‑solving abilities for effective solutions.
- Experience coordinating and directing subcontractors safely and efficiently.
- Track record of upholding workplace safety and adhering to WSP policies.
- Flexible scheduling to meet project demands.
- Occasional travel may be required.
- Master’s Degree in Engineering.
- LEED certification.
- Experience in the healthcare industry.
- Experience managing small to mid‑size projects.
