School Counselor, Guidance Counselor: Social/Educational
Primary Purpose
The School Counselor will work with school leaders, faculty, staff, students, parents and the community to develop, implement, and evaluate a high‑quality comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program for grades 9‑12. The counselor should have a holistic view of students’ overall academic plans and progress. This position includes evaluating transcripts, scheduling students, assisting with state testing rosters, and conducting individual and group counseling sessions.
The counselor must understand state testing, graduation requirements, and accountability, and must support the campus in building capacity in these areas. Focus will be on individual planning, scheduling, and transcript audits for at least 70% of the time.
- Manage and audit student schedules for 100% accuracy
- Develop and audit four‑year plans and purposeful scheduling plans
- Audit transcripts using the audit form
- Evaluate incoming student records and transcripts
- Evaluate transcript data entry
- Audit report cards
- Ongoing audit of campus data roster
- Assist campus leadership in building and adjusting the master schedule based on campus needs
- Support campus in all four components of a comprehensive guidance and counseling program: individual planning, responsive services, guidance curriculum, and system support
- Work with frequent deadlines and prevent student drop‑outs
- Maintain constant communication with administration, faculty, and parents
- Serve as a resource person for students and teachers
- Compile, maintain, and file all required reports and documents
- Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required
- Demonstrate core values: integrity, high expectations, commitment, respect, teamwork, and a student‑centered passion
- Develop procedures to monitor at‑risk students and ensure resources for success
- Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders to improve student retention
- Provide guidance and transition information to students and parents as students move to the next grade level
- Handle course placement for new and returning students, evaluate transcripts, and create four‑year plans while maintaining accurate information on graduation requirements and program options
- Help students develop problem‑solving and decision‑making skills, appropriate school behavior, self‑awareness, and social skills through individual and group guidance
- Coordinate the administration of standardized testing programs and interpret test results while maintaining confidentiality of student assessments
- Perform any other duties as assigned
- Plan the guidance and counseling program to meet identified needs
- Provide leadership in the development and implementation of the comprehensive program
- Teach developmental guidance curriculum to students
- Provide voluntary and confidential counseling to individuals and small groups
- Work with school personnel to obtain resources for students
- Use an effective referral process for special programs and services
- Compile, maintain, and file all required reports and documents
- Interpret test results appropriately
- Evaluate the guidance program and implement changes based on need
- Keep informed and comply with state, district, and federal policies and procedures
Frequent interruptions and deadlines; require emotional control under stress; occasional prolonged or irregular hours; regular district‑wide travel to multiple locations as assigned; moderate lifting and carrying.
Qualifications- Education/Certification: Master’s degree in guidance counseling; valid Texas counselor certification or out‑of‑state certification with the ability to obtain Texas certification within one year.
- Experience: At least two years of high‑school counseling experience (preferred).

Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development; effective human relations; ability to promote a positive and caring environment; ability to interact and communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents; effective decision‑making and problem‑solving skills; coordination of school support operations; strong communication for presenting information accurately and clearly; proficiency in Microsoft Office, SQL Data, and Windows applications.
