Advocate Media is hyper-local news organization focused on deeply understanding and becoming involved with the communities we cover. A 34-year-old Dallas non-profit, we produce five award-winning glossy print & online magazines, along with companion websites and social media, read by more than 500,000 people monthly.

We are a tight-knit group of dedicated professionals who work closely together. We believe in getting things done, but we also believe there’s a life outside of the office. We need a conscientious, relationship-building writer/editor capable of following through on their own ideas with a candid, honest writing style suitable for both print and online reading.

Reporters are expected to spend significant time in the community they are writing about, developing close sources and regularly attending relevant meetings and events.

• This role requires reporting and writing in the following topics:
• Development/zoning
• Infrastructure
• Education
• Dining
• Culture & entertainment
• History
• Report and write 7-8 online news stories a week
• Write 5-6 magazine stories a month
• Attend staff meetings in person and be in-office for magazine production
• Help determine magazine pacing and planning
• Brainstorm and collaborate with design, digital and production teams

• We’re an Apple office. (We have a computer for you to use.)
• Knows how to access public records like Certificate of Occupancy, crime reports, FOIAs
• Proficient in hard news reporting and writing
• Some experience with magazine feature writing
• Can manage monthly and daily deadlines
• Passionate about local journalism
• Strong interpersonal skills

Journalism degree preferred or 2-3 years of newsroom experience
