Central Market is a specialty grocery started in Austin, Texas in 1994, now with multiple locations across the state. We offer a wide selection of cheeses, wines, produce, and a customer‑friendly experience that celebrates food culture.
OverviewAs an Art Specialist, you bring the Central Market brand experience to life in our stores. Each store reflects a unique expression of our brand, building a stage to tell product stories and transform the grocery trip into a food adventure. You will design, develop, and install hand‑crafted lettering, signs, murals, 3D displays, and custom illustrations that highlight our products and events.
Responsibilities- Create hand‑crafted, eye‑catching artwork and displays to sell products through signs, banners, chalkboards, foam art, and sculptures.
- Serve as Central Market Brand Ambassador in your store, ensuring all art and event experiences align with the store’s look and marketing concepts.
- Research product information to create compelling, accurate stories; research themes and cultures for signature events.
- Produce chalkboard art in key departments that share deals and sell products.
- Produce materials such as banners, menus, handouts, posters, badge flappers, and internal communications.
- Conceptualize and create camera‑ready painted signs, foam art, and sculptures in various sizes and mediums.
- Produce larger‑scale art pieces using foam board, paper, plaster, cardboard, wood, fabric, and found materials.
- Complete superficial sculpture, 3D layering, and faux techniques (wood, marble, stone, paper, metal).
- Manage weekly sale sign production, including attribute signs and pricing tags.
- Maintain the studio, cleaning duties, storage of signs and props, and maintenance of tools such as computer, printer, and laminator.
- Research and stay current on styles and techniques, and decorate for in‑store partner celebrations and events.
- 1+ year of experience in commercial art, freelance, or studio work.
- Technical knowledge of construction and tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, routers, jigsaws, and drills.
- Strong understanding of acrylic‑ and latex‑based paints, brush control, composition, color theory, value, and perspective.
- Knowledge of appropriate uses of glue, adhesives, chemicals, stains, treatments, and solvents.
- Familiarity with MS Office and proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Illustrator on a Mac.
- Strong communication and customer‑service skills.
- Strong hand lettering and painting skills.
- Drafting and drawing skills.
- Ability to select and use finishes that are aesthetically pleasing.
- Ability to copywrite or source copy, where needed.
- Ability to complete projects in a fast‑paced environment and adapt quickly to business needs; attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a highly cross‑functional, dynamic, and collaborative team environment.
