Job Summary
This level Inspector is responsible for very specialized inspection, investigation and enforcement in one of the specialized functions:
Signal Construction and Code Specialist. The Inspector inspects very complex projects and works independently, making technical decisions and serving as the City’s final technical authority.
- Conducts and performs a wide range of inspections on City properties and projects to determine compliance with safety, structural, zoning, plans, and applicable codes and ordinances; ensures correct permitting and documentation.
- Identifies, researches, and investigates alleged violations; ensures corrections are made and evaluates alternate compliance methods.
- Issues and drafts notices of violation, conducts follow‑up inspections, and provides information to customers about codes and regulations.
- Performs complex inspections for signal construction, zoning, environmental, housing, park facilities, and other projects; monitors contractor compliance and communicates with project personnel.
- Interprets and enforces zoning regulations in Conservation and Historic Districts and Planned Developments; inspects residential and commercial sites for compliance.
- Provides testimony during hearings and trials for prosecution of violators of Dallas City Codes or state and federal regulations.
- Examines construction work performed by outside contractors and city personnel to enforce contract specifications and ensure quality control.
- Inspects work at construction sites and reviews plans for compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, zoning, barricade/sign codes and other regulations.
- Patrols assigned areas to ensure permits, licenses, and barricades are in compliance at street work sites.
- Keeps abreast of new construction materials, new repair scams, and changes in relevant codes and ordinances; maintains communication with builders, developers, and contractors.
- Performs any other work as needed or assigned.
- Knowledge of inspection practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of construction methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of Uniform Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, Building, or Zoning Codes with City of Dallas amendments, Dallas Development Code, Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, or related consumer protection ordinances.
- Ability to use power and hand maintenance tools, inspection tools, and precision test equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply City codes and ordinances.
- Ability to enforce city codes and rules with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Education: High School Diploma, GED.
Experience: Four (4) years of experience inspecting design, construction, or maintenance of streets, storm drainage systems, water/sewer mains, water/wastewater facilities, and/or bridge improvement projects.
Equivalencies: Associate degree (or higher) in any field plus three (3) years of the required experience.

Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
- International Code Council (ICC) Building Inspector Certification required within one (1) year from hire/promotion.
$55,432.00 - $65,062.40. The salary listed is the starting range; the amount offered will depend on qualifications.
