- Contract role (6-10 months)
The Accounting Manager reports to the Controller and will serve as the hands‑on operational leader of the accounting function during a defined transition period. This role is responsible for managing the day‑to‑day accounting activities of the department, including direct supervision of three accounting staff: the A/P accountant, Revenue accountant, and General Ledger Accountant. The Accounting Manager will ensure disciplined execution of month‑end and year‑end close processes, maintain internal controls and workflows, and support audit preparation and compliance requirements.
The ideal candidate is a detail‑oriented and adaptable accounting professional with strong analytical and problem‑solving skills grounded in practical execution. This individual communicates clearly, enforces deadlines, and manages multiple priorities in a structured and methodical manner. A consistent commitment to accuracy, accountability, and procedural discipline is essential. Experience supporting process improvements and implementing practical workflow enhancements that increase efficiency and reliability within the accounting function is strongly valued.
Key Responsibilities Leadership & Oversight- Supervise and develop a team of three staff (A/P accountant, Revenue accountant and General Ledger accountant) responsible for the entire cycle of accounting operations
- Support the Controller in implementing the departmental restructuring and ensuring a smooth transition to improved systems and workflows
- Serve as a key liaison between the finance team, operations and program departments to ensure financial alignment and understanding of accounting processes
- Demonstrates a collaborative, team‑oriented mindset and embraces new challenges with flexibility and enthusiasm
- Execute month‑end and fiscal year‑end close processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely reporting
- Oversee daily functions including revenue recognition, disbursements, payroll processing and fixed assets
- Ensure proper recording of contributions, grants, and complex gifts in collaboration with the operations and fundraising teams.
- Prepare and review GL entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- Support preparation of reports for management, Board of Directors, and funders
- Support the controller in the development of the annual budget and forecasts
- Ad hoc reporting as needed
- Assist the Controller in preparing schedules and narratives in support of all ACWIS external audits
- Maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP nonprofit accounting standards, grantor reporting and federal and state regulatory requirements
- Oversee financial data integrity between Raiser's Edge, Emburse, , Accu Fund and ADP
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes through automation and AI‑enabled solutions for efficiency and accuracy
- Partner with IT and system vendors to maintain and optimize financial systems
- Document and standardize accounting procedures
- Assist with ERP implementation testing, data migration and workflow validation
- Contribute to creating a culture of innovation, accountability, and collaboration in the finance department
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
- 5+ years of progressive nonprofit accounting experience.
- 3+ years of experience managing close processes and supervising staff.
- Experience working with Blackbaud product line:
Financial Edge and Raiser's Edge. - Experience in Accu Fund software preferred but not required.
- Familiarity with complimentary systems that manage payables, expense reimbursement and payroll functions (e.g., Emburse, and ADP).
