Overview

Job Summary: The Media Specialist is a vital and supportive member of the PCSD team, working collaboratively with educators, support staff, and administration to achieve the shared goal of ensuring all students receive the education they need to succeed both today and tomorrow. This role is performed within a school environment, overseen by the school principal, where teamwork and dedication to student success are paramount.

All staff are expected to fully adhere to the ethical standards set forth by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, continuously demonstrating a strong understanding of the tasks and responsibilities their roles require. Moreover, they must embody the core belief that every action we take is driven by a commitment to the best interests of our students.

Primary Function

Plan, develop, coordinate, and align the instructional programs of the school media center with the school curriculum. Enhance the educational process by providing a wide variety and selection of library material and equipment that would meet the diverse learning needs of the students. Demonstrated knowledge of school curriculum and teaching strategies. Knowledge of media related computer hardware and software. Plan, use and facilitate student use of computer and audiovisual hardware and software in the media center.

Qualifications

A Georgia Teaching Certificate in assigned teaching field as required by the Professional Standards Commission or bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university and completion of a library media teacher services program or a bachelor’s degree in Media Specialist

Three (3) years of successful teaching experience

The Board of Education and the Superintendent may accept alternatives to some of the above requirements.

Essential Functions
  • Align the library media program, collection and services with the school curriculum and the learning and teaching needs for students and staff
  • Plan and implement a program of instruction in the use of the media center so students can conduct independent study, research, and on-line resources
  • Provide students and staff with a variety of services and materials designated to support and to enrich the instructional program
  • Coordinate the evaluation, selection and circulation of reading material, audiovisual material, and electronic media equipment in accordance with district/school selection policies
  • Periodically review and update media center materials, discard unsuitable or outdated materials, build up deficient areas, and replace worn or lost material
  • Initiate and coordinate the preparation and production of media center materials and provide guidance for student and/or faculty projects
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan, develop, and implement units of study which promote literacy and integrate information skills into the curriculum to meet district standards
  • Provide leadership to plan, organize, manage, and promote the media center program and its resources, equipment, and facilities
  • Provide training, instruction, and direction to classified staff, student workers and volunteers
  • Effectively manage textbook and media center budgets
  • Participate in site curriculum development committees and district evaluation programs for textbooks, audiovisual material, or electronic resources
  • Attend professional meetings and conferences to develop and enhance competencies
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Superintendent or designee
