Job Summary

The University of North Georgia is accepting applications for a Department Head for Elementary and Special Education, College of Education. This is a 12-month position. The department head reports to campus Monday through Friday throughout the year and participates in a five-year 360 review. The department head is responsible for the quality of instruction, research, and programs in the department and has general direction over its work.

Working with the leadership team, the department head formulates and recommends policies for the department and presents them to faculty for consideration. The department head administers rules and regulations enacted by the faculty and is responsible for execution of departmental, institutional, and system-level policies as they affect the department. The department head provides opportunities for faculty to express ideas, engage in productive discussions, and participate in departmental affairs.

The department head leads the faculty in developing curricula, uses resources efficiently, employs robust methods for assessing instructional programs, and ensures quality and standards for departmental initiatives submitted to other units within shared governance. They also work with faculty on promotion and tenure, professional development, evaluation, and personnel issues; manage student issues; and manage the course schedule. They collaborate with leadership on recruitment and retention for graduate and undergraduate programs and enhance the department s image and reputation on and off campus.

Responsibilities
  • Manage/build the course schedule and faculty assignments each semester.
  • Attend state meetings regarding accreditation and assessment related to the department s programs and share information with faculty. Collaborate with the Associate Dean of Assessment and Accreditation to collect, monitor, track, analyze, and report program performance data. Maintain an efficient system of records and reporting for the department and its programs.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean of Student Support Services to monitor academic program performance and handle student issues as they arise.
  • Manage faculty issues as they emerge, keep faculty informed, ensure understanding of the Faculty Annual Review process, and conduct evaluations.
  • Work with faculty on curricular review and development. Facilitate processes for new courses and programs, including initial departmental voting and submission to the College s Curriculum Committee and institution s curriculum management system.
  • Review and update the catalogue, website, and public materials for the department s programs and courses.
  • Post part-time and full-time positions as needed, charge hiring committees, train faculty to serve on search committees, mentor new faculty, and assist with onboarding.
