Job Summary

The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a federal work study student in the Tutoring Services department on the Oconee campus. This position will tutor students in one or more STEM disciplines (first- and second-year mathematics, general physics, general Chemistry, and/or accounting) offered by the University and will assist students, faculty, and staff with all services provided by UNG tutoring centers.

Responsibilities

  • Tutor students in one or more STEM disciplines: first- and second-year mathematics, general physics, general Chemistry, and/or accounting
  • Work on examples to illustrate appropriate use of concepts
  • Encourage students to use class notes and other resources to complete assignments
  • Demonstrate the use of calculators, both graphing and non-graphing, and relevant software for the discipline
  • Assist in the general operation of the tutoring center
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director, Assistant Director, or Tutoring Lab Coordinator of Tutoring Services

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Competency of subject matter tutored
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft software and graphing calculators
  • Must be friendly and personable and exhibit patience and empathy toward fellow students
  • Must possess strong communication skills
  • Ability to help students by providing prompts and clearing up misconceptions.
  • Ability to interpret word problems effectively to clarify core concepts.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Ability to break down and explain component parts in a concise but clear manner

Required Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled at the University of North Georgia in a minimum of six (6) credit hours to qualify as a student worker.
  • STEM Peer Tutor Experience
  • Must be currently enrolled at UNG with at least 6 credit-hours
  • A GPA of at least a 3.0
  • A grade of A or B in the introductory sequence required for the major of the tutored subject (e.g., CHEM 1211/1212, PHYS 2211/2212, MATH 1111 and MATH 1113)
  • A grade of A or B in higher-level courses preferred (e.g., MATH 1401, MATH 1450, CHEM 3441, etc.)
