As we expand our design and development capabilities, we are seeking a Senior Utility Specialist/Coordinator to support our design department and ensure seamless integration of utility systems across our residential and commercial project portfolio.
Responsibilities Utility Coordination & Design Integration- Lead utility coordination efforts for residential, SB9, ADU, multi-family, and light industrial projects.
- Review architectural and civil design plans to identify utility conflicts and propose solutions.
- Coordinate with Northern California utility companies, municipalities, and internal design teams to obtain approvals and resolve issues.
- Conduct desktop utility research and support subsurface utility investigations (SUE) when required.
- Prepare utility conflict analyses, relocation concepts, and easement requirements.
- Prepare and submit utility applications, service requests, and construction permits.
- Track utility submittals, responses, and approval timelines.
- Maintain accurate documentation for agency compliance and project records.
- Assist in preparing utility-related exhibits, diagrams, and technical reports.
- Participate in design coordination meetings and represent the utility coordination function.
- Provide technical guidance to project managers, architects, and consultants.
- Support project schedules by forecasting utility timelines and identifying risks.
- Communicate proactively with clients, agencies, and utility providers.
Required Qualifications
- 7–10+ years of experience in utility coordination, utility design, or related fields.
- Strong understanding of wet and dry utility systems and their regulatory requirements.
- Experience working with Northern California utility agencies, such as:
- PG&E (electric & gas)
- East Bay MUD, SFPUC, Valley Water, or other regional water districts
- Comcast, AT&T, Sonic, and other telecom providers
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, civil, and utility plans.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with AutoCAD or similar platforms.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and coordination skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with residential and small-to-mid-scale commercial projects.
- Knowledge of SB9, ADU, and multi-family development processes.
- Background in architecture, civil engineering, or construction management.
- Ability to prepare utility layouts in 2D/3D using CAD software.
- Prior experience coordinating with local jurisdictions such as:
- San Francisco
- Oakland
- San Jose
- Sacramento
- Santa Rosa
- Fremont
