Job Overview
The purpose of this classification is to perform semi-skilled or unskilled work associated with maintenance of County roads, bridges, and related facilities.
This position is part of the Equipment Operator series; depending on prior experience/training and certifications the department reserves the right to hire candidates and promote accordingly.
RequirementsEquipment Operator I - Non-Exempt, starting at $37,527.00/yr. High school diploma or GED preferred; and entry level experience and/or training involving road maintenance and traffic flagging is desirable; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must be able to obtain and/or maintain a Flagging Certification within six (6) months from hire date.
Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
Equipment Operator II - Non-Exempt, starting at $40,635.00/yr. High school diploma or GED preferred; supplemented by vocational/technical training in equipment operation and traffic flagging; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience and/or training involving equipment operation, traffic flagging, and work in area of assignment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Must be able to obtain and/or maintain a Flagging Certification within six (6) months from hire date. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
Equipment Operator III - Non-Exempt, starting at $45,702.00/yr. High school diploma or GED preferred; supplemented by vocational/technical training in equipment operation, traffic flagging, and work in area of assignment; supplemented by two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving equipment operation, traffic flagging, and work in area of assignment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Department of Transportation Flagging Certification within 6 months of hire. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
Performs various tasks associated with maintenance of County roads and bridges; assists in maintaining roads, road shoulders, and ditches; cleans out ditches and pipes; repairs/patches potholes; applies cold mix to asphalt; builds forms/frames for concrete structures; mixes, pours, shovels, levels, and finishes concrete; cuts/busts and removes cement/asphalt; rakes or sweeps roadways and ground surfaces; loads seed into machinery; spreads salt, sand, seed, hay, or other materials onto ground surfaces;
mows grass and edges landscaped areas; cuts or prunes trees/shrubbery; removes dead animals or other debris from roadways; digs holes/trenches and shovels materials; installs or replaces traffic signs.
Assists with traffic control at construction/work sites; flags traffic through/around work sites; sets up safety cones, barricades, barrels, and road/warning signs; assists other equipment operators in maneuvering equipment within work sites.
Assists equipment operators or other workers in conducting work activities.
Monitors inventory levels of department equipment, tools, supplies, and other materials; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new or replacement materials.
Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with projects and work activities, which may include a utility truck, tractor, cement mixer, pick axe, sledgehammer, saw, chainsaw, loop, torch, shovel, rake, broom, hedge clipper, mechanic tools, hand tools, ladder, or two-way radio.
Performs general/preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting/testing equipment, refueling vehicles, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, sharpening blades, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and…
