Overview
The purpose of this classification is to support a positive, inclusive, and enriching Therapeutic Recreation camp experience for individuals with disabilities and special needs, while providing leadership and guidance to assisting camp counselors under the direction of the Camp Director.
Responsibilities- Ensures camp rules, safety expectations, and participant support standards are followed.
- Oversees, directs, and organizes camp participants with disabilities and special needs.
- Supports routines and smooth transitions between activities, meals, rest, and field trips.
- Implements inclusive, adaptive activities and adjusts support based on participant needs.
- Uses behavior-support strategies, clear expectations, and positive reinforcement to promote success.
- Provides guidance and support to Camp Counselor I staff; models appropriate participant support.
- Prepares facilities and equipment for camp activities; ensures spaces are safe and accessible.
- Maintains and stores camp equipment and supplies, including adaptive materials.
- Assists participants with daily needs as required, including toileting/personal care and feeding support.
- Maintains clear and positive communication with camp leadership, coworkers, parents/caregivers, and participants.
- Administers First Aid and reports injuries/accidents/illnesses to the summer camp leadership team.
- Responds to behavioral incidents and other situations according to camp policies; escalates concerns as needed.
- Completes assigned documentation such as attendance notes, incident reports, and behavior documentation.
- Facilitates camp activities and programming as needed.
- Drives county vehicles for camp transportation and field trips when assigned.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Experience working or volunteering with children with disabilities and experience working or volunteering with youth is preferred.
- Must possess organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Must be enthusiastic, adaptable, dependable and responsible.
- Must be able to work outdoors and participate in active games and programming.
- Must pass Criminal Background Check and drug test.
- Must attend and complete First Aid/CPR Certification (prior to start of summer camp).
