Job DescriptionJoin UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper as a Registered Nurse Resident in the Intensive Medical Care Unit. You will shape patient care by collaborating with the healthcare team, providing evidence‑based nursing, and supporting patients and families throughout their health journey.
Job SummaryThe Nurse Resident is a leader of the healthcare team, establishing authentic relationships with patients and their support systems, collaborating with physicians and other team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans that promote optimal health or support a peaceful death. The RN resident upholds policies and procedures, demonstrates compassion, and is accountable for management and provision of patient care.
Qualifications- Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and successful completion of the NCLEX. 4‑Year/Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Experience: Refer to the Life Support Training Policy.
- Licensure: Current RN licensure in the applicable state required.
- Additional Skills/Requirements: Willingness to learn, excellent customer service, superior verbal and non‑verbal communication, interpersonal relationship skills, conflict resolution, critical thinking, and information technology skills.

- Advocate for patients and implement the interdisciplinary plan of care.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to educate patients and their support systems.
- Analyze, modify, and implement strategies to progress patients through their care plan.
- Ensure completion of nursing interventions, medical orders, and related therapies.
- Prioritize duties according to patients' needs and acuity changes.
- Communication
- Use appropriate communication tools within the interdisciplinary team and during patient hand‑offs.
- Communicate individualized care plans to patients and their chosen support systems.
- Apply SBARQ to convey information more effectively.
- Document information timely and accurately.
- Teamwork
- Maintain positive relationships with team members and internal customers.
- Mentor, precept, orient, and give feedback to develop team members.
- Resolve conflicts independently and respond positively to feedback.
- Medical Knowledge
- Operate equipment such as portable cardiac monitors and bedside commodes.
- Provide routine nursing care including IVs, dressing changes, and more for multiple patients efficiently.
- Assist in critical situations, including administering CPR.
- Administer and evaluate medication therapies, perform patient transfers, and transport patients via wheelchair, hospital bed, or stretcher.
- Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
Medium to Heavy Physical Demand: constant standing, frequent walking, bending/stooping. Must be able to lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs. For weights over 35 lbs., safe handling equipment is required.
Other Information- May require safety equipment such as HEPA mask for infection prevention.
- On‑call responsibilities as directed.
- Ability to travel between campus buildings, remote facilities, and out of town as needed.
