Overview

Responsibilities- Handle instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure; anticipate the surgeon’s needs and maintain the sterile field.
- Assist the surgical team before, during, and after surgery by checking instruments, supplies, and equipment; scrub, gown, and gloves; set up the sterile table.
- Assist with patient placement and positioning on the table; drape the sterile field according to the procedure and physician preference.
- Perform appropriate counts for sponges, needles, and instruments; maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
- Pass instruments to the surgeon; hold retractors; cut suture and cauterize previously clamped vessels; prepare sterile dressings; apply and secure dressings as directed by the surgeon.
- Assist cleaning the operating room after each procedure; prep the room for the next patient.
- Participate in department performance improvement activities.
- Maintain positive interpersonal relations with physicians, nurses, and other members of the health care team.
- Understand age-related patient care needs and provide care appropriately.
- Adapt to each physician’s needs, requests, and preferences; communicate changes to the team lead; update staff preference cards accordingly.
- Mentor new employees and new graduate surgical technologist by supporting the new employee.
- Enhance partner growth through national certification; assist partners in obtaining education required to achieve national specialty certification and maintain certification.
- Complete projects assigned by Team Lead.
- Assist in training new partners or students successfully; offer constructive feedback during training process.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program required for surgical technologist experience.
LPN grandfathered (3) at Rockford campus in lieu of Surgical Technology program.
Certification and LicensureCertified Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA.
Approved CPR or BLS certification required within 90 days.
IL LPN Licensure grandfathered (3) at Rockford campus in lieu of Certified Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA.
Additional RequirementsPassing the Driver’s License Check and/or Credit Check (for those positions requiring).
Passing the WI Caregiver Background Check and/or IL Health Care Workers Background Check. Must be able to follow written or oral instructions.
Work EnvironmentThe noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Occupational exposure:
Category A – All partners in the specified job classification have occupational exposure. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to cold, hot, or wet conditions; fluoroscopic radiation; laser light; surgical smoke; and blood borne pathogens. Required personal protection equipment (PPE) includes eye and face protection, impervious gown, shoe covers, head cover, gloves, and lead apron.
Physical Demands
The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
More supervisory responsibilities are conducted in accordance with directives of management, the organization’s policies, and applicable laws.
