Baxter & Woodman has a rewarding opportunity for a Construction Engineer VI (Department Manager) in our Crystal Lake, IL office. The Construction Engineer VI will support the firm’s construction group with on a variety of projects ranging from roadways and bridges to highway agency program management. In this senior role the Construction Engineer VI will manage multi-disciplinary teams delivering projects for major state and regional agencies including the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois State Toll Highway Authority (ISTHA), Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), county DOTs, and other large public-works owners.

The Construction Engineer VI position will offer the opportunity to work directly with clients and assist with design of projects. This position will be responsible for management of staff and their assignments and perform Department Management duties.

What your day-to-day will look like, what you will learn on the job
  • Department Manager for Construction Services in the specified geographic region.
  • Business Development of IDOT, Tollway, and WisDOT opportunities.
  • Develop strategic M/D/VBE partnerships for IDOT, Tollway, and WisDOT opportunities.
  • Oversee work of others and assign work to staff.
  • Develop training programs for staff.
  • Mentor employees for career advancement.
  • In charge of extensive and complex projects as Project Manager.
  • Strong relationships with clients and participation in business development.
  • Client Management duties.
  • Assist in field as required.
  • Prepare proposals and contracts for future work, attend interviews as required.
  • Endeavor to provide protection for owner against defects and deficiencies in the work.
  • Serve as liaison with contractor.
  • Monitor progress schedule and shop drawing log.
  • Review pay requests and verify completed work.
  • General civil engineering and client service.
  • Assist with design of future projects during off season.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Local travel throughout Chicago area as needed based on business needs.
Education Requirement
  • A bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent accepted) in civil or construction engineering.
Must-haves, what you will bring
  • Professional Engineer License.
  • 4 years of work experience in consultant construction engineering or related.
  • 4 years of experience managing construction projects in an Assistant Resident Engineer or Resident Engineering capacity.
  • 4 years of past experience on IDOT, ISTHA, and WisDOT projects.
  • Broad knowledge of principles of engineering as well as advanced engineering expertise.
  • Computer skills and mastery of proprietary software (IDOT, ISTHA, and WisDOT construction management programs, etc.).
  • Effective communication, both oral and written, with residents, businesses and public agencies.
  • Ability to travel throughout Chicago area (own transportation).
  • Work in a team environment.
  • Strong written, verbal, computer and organizational skills.
Compensation
