About the Department

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine is comprised of 25 full‑time faculty members who specialize in a wide variety of orthopaedic problems, including bone and soft tissue cancer, bone health and fragility, bone infection care, foot and ankle care, fracture care, hand and wrist care, hip care, knee care, pediatric orthopaedic care, shoulder and elbow care, spine care and sports medicine.

Advanced Practice Providers are an integral part of the care team and work as independent providers within subspecialty teams.

Job Summary

We are looking for an Advanced Practice Provider (Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse) to join our orthopaedic clinical team. The role involves autonomous decision‑making in assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments for musculoskeletal conditions. Responsibilities include evaluation, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with musculoskeletal disorders in an outpatient setting at our Crown Point location. The scope also covers family support, discharge planning, staff education, consultation, and research.

Responsibilities
  • Provide healthcare services typically performed by a physician, under the supervision of or in collaboration with a physician.
  • Conduct independent clinics and provide care for new, return, and pre‑ and post‑operative patients.
  • Perform in‑office procedures (e.g., arthrocentesis) and assist in the operating room.
  • Assume accountability for patient care, including making clinical decisions, prescribing medications as authorized, delegating tasks, and maintaining a comfortable environment.
  • Collaborate and act as liaison among nurses, patients, families, physicians, and community resources to coordinate care.
  • Select appropriate communication approaches to achieve desired patient outcomes.
  • Pursue required knowledge and skills for professional development.
  • Participate in quality‑assurance activities and community health education.
  • Prepare statistical reports and analyses on progress, adverse trends, and recommendations.
  • Serve as a clinical skills resource for staff.
  • Assist in teaching students and residents in unique techniques and procedures.
  • Develop and coordinate APP training and professional development activities.
  • Design patient‑education programs to support informed health‑care decisions.
  • Evaluate outcomes, balancing benefit versus burden, safety, quality, and cost‑effectiveness.
  • Develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions to achieve care goals.
  • Manage adverse drug reactions, especially in vulnerable populations (infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, older adults).
  • Perform other related duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

• College or university degree from an accredited school or college.

• Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related discipline.

• Current or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office.

Preferred Qualifications
  • College or university degree from an accredited school or college.
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
Experience
  • Two or more years of clinical experience in a related specialty area.
  • Demonstrated clinical competency, leadership, and teaching skills.
  • Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments.
  • Ability to interview patients and obtain medical information.
  • Willingness to enter into a written collaborative agreement with a collaborating physician upon hire.
  • Willingness to apply for a controlled substance license and DEA number, if required.
  • Willingness to be privileged and credentialed through the UCM Medical Staff Office prior to start date.
