Position Summary
Functions as a specialized direct patient caregiver in the Emergency Department, performing tasks to assist nurses and providers. Performs hands-on care, specified technical tasks, and coordinates communications on the unit.
Responsibilities- Enters and updates the ED tracking board promptly to communicate with staff.
- Document/maintain patient records as appropriate.
- Take and record temperature, pulse, respiration rates, blood pressures, oxygen saturation, weights, heights, and intake-output measurements.
- Complete all items/activities on the TECH CHECKLIST of DAILY ACTIVITIES as applicable.
- Order patient care supplies and keep patient care supplies stocked in proper amounts in rooms, carts and other areas as appropriate.
- Clean and wrap instruments to transport to sterile processing with ability to correctly identify and replace proper surgical instruments on appropriate trays.
- Assist in maintaining a safe environment, including checking equipment daily for proper function and reporting equipment that is out of order, handling linen and storing supplies appropriately.
- Gathers equipment for O2 set up; checks O2 for connection and proper placement.
- Set up suction equipment and check for proper function.
- Promptly answers patient call lights and responds to patient requests.
- Report observed changes in patient condition to nurse or provider.
- Assist with transportation of patients to other areas of the facility.
- Prepare wounds for provider as directed; clean and dress wounds appropriately.
- Apply splints; apply immobilizers and ace bandages; fit patient for crutches.
- Perform tasks such as ROM; assist with ambulatory devices as specified by the patient s plan of care.
- Assist provider with pelvic exams.
- Assist in triage with vital signs.
- Ambulate and assist patients in and out of bed, into wheelchairs and transport as necessary (on oxygen if required).
- Empty canisters, urine bags, bedpans and emesis basins and record intake and output.
- Provide general care such as positioning, lifting or turning patients; assist in use of bedpan, urinal or commode; preoperative supportive care; anti-embolism stockings and sequential compression devices.
- Collect urine, stool and sputum specimens as ordered.
- Perform phlebotomy with correct labeling using two patient identifiers, maintain lab-draw supplies, rotate and restock.
- Performs INT removal per nursing or LIP direction.
- Perform suture/staple removal at nurse or LIP direction.
- Perform EKG.
- Adhere to infection control policies including standard precautions and OSHA standards; apply safety measures and proper body mechanics.
