Purpose of Job

The LAR Peer Leader program provides opportunities for upper-class students to guide, educate, and support new incoming first-year students in becoming successful at Doane University. Peer leaders promote student belonging, both within the classroom and throughout the university, using past experiences to encourage meaningful learning practices for students. Peer mentorship can create feelings of connection between campus and community, higher GPA , and increase long- term persistence rates on college campuses (Colvin & Ashman, 2010).

General

Description and Duties General Description:

The LAR Peer Leader plays various roles to assist students in their first-year transition at Doane University, through three roles:

  • Orientation Leader:
    As a member of the Orientation Team, the LAR Peer Leader assists with all aspects of Welcome Week activities and works closely with their LAR class to develop community and a connection to campus.
  • Teaching Assistant:
    As a Peer Leader in the LAR 101 course, PLs will be members of a teaching team for first-year students and assist the LAR faculty member. The Peer Leader will support the LAR instructor in providing academic assistance, and duties may include, but are not limited to, facilitating in-class activities, taking attendance, giving instruction, attending out-of-class speakers/events, individual/group tutoring or study sessions, and role modeling for students in and out of class.
  • Peer Coach:
    The Peer Leader supports students with college transition issues and provides support to enhance a sense of belonging, wellness, social engagement, and professional development through a series of 1-on-1 coaching sessions.
Specific Duties
  • Enroll and attend LAR 301L, the LAR Peer Leader seminar, bi-weekly one-hour planning and reporting seminar with PL team and the Director of Academic Advising. Meet with LAR faculty weekly.
  • Complete all training modules, including:
    • Attending Spring Student Leadership Summit, April 26, 2026
    • Online Canvas Modules on Peer Coaching
    • In-person Training prior to (and during) Welcome Week
  • Participate in all New Student Orientation activities, including Summer Enrollment Days and Welcome Week.
  • Provide academic support and assist with instruction for LAR 101 under the guidance of the course’s faculty member.
  • Lead three one-on-one coaching sessions with each member of your LAR 101 class.
  • Active participation in the Pathways Majors Fair by engaging with LAR 101 students through consistent communication and encouraging their attendance as well as facilitating the event on the day of.
  • Active engagement with LAR 101 students through consistent communication and attending 4 Extended Liberal Arts Events.
  • Serve as a resource for professional development and course selection, build positive relationships with LAR students as an academic and personal role model, and communicate relevant student concerns to faculty and staff.
Special Skills or Knowledge Required Total Weekly Hours Required

6 - 8 hours per week during the fall semester, on average. LAR 301L graded credit option and stipend ($400 for Fall)
