Position: Lead Groundskeeper (Parks) (M-F, 6:00am - 2:30pm)

Performs grounds maintenance, irrigation, custodial, and landscaping tasks; provides county staff and the public with safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient places in which to engage in business or recreation.

  • Assists in the training of department staff in proper methods and procedures (i.e., safety, use of equipment, cleaning techniques, preventive maintenance, handling of chemicals and toxic agents, etc.).
  • Assists with assigning and monitoring beach cleaning and grounds maintenance tasks; assists supervisor in the selection, assignment, and scheduling of staff.
  • Monitors beach conditions, adjusts the frequency of beach cleaning activities, and assigns appropriate regular and temporary personnel.
  • Monitors inventory supply levels and prepares requests for orders.
  • Maintains general administrative and operational records (i.e., daily work orders, tasks completed, supplies and materials used).
  • Assists in assigning and monitoring tasks for other staff and inmates.
  • Assists in developing landscaping and irrigation design and site plans; installs, troubleshoots, and maintains irrigation systems.
  • Maintains and repairs assigned grounds (i.e., cleaning, planting, mowing, and pruning).
  • Mixes and applies chemicals, fertilizers and cleaners in a safe manner; ensuring personal, staff and public safety; performs ornamental spraying; complies with all EPA standards and guidelines.
  • Prepares areas for sodding; repairs turf related public safety hazards.
  • Performs maintenance checks on grounds equipment and vehicles; performs minor repairs as needed (i.e., small engine and electric motor overhauls, fuel system replacement, wiring, welding, etc.).
  • Operates various hand-held manual, electrical, and gas-powered tools and equipment (i.e., shovel, lawn mower, chainsaw, weed eater, blower, and hedger).
  • Cleans equipment after use; maintains cleanliness and order in assigned storage rooms; reports equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs to immediate supervisor.
  • Assists with custodial tasks as needed.

  • Education, Training, and

    Experience:

    High school diploma or GED supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years of experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping and/or irrigation tasks, preferably in a commercial or similar environment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Experience in a lead or supervisory capacity preferred.
  • Licenses and/or

    Certifications:

    Requires a valid driver’s license. Ornamental Pest Control certification required, or must be obtained within one (18) months of hire. Certification to supervise county inmates preferred.
  • Physical Requirements:

    Must be able to operate a variety of hand-held, electrical, and gas-powered equipment and tools, including mowers, blowers, edgers, etc. Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Must be able to perform manual tasks and remain on feet for extended periods.

    Tasks include considerable bending, stooping, climbing, etc., and working in confined spaces. Requires full range of body motion in manipulation of limbs and torso. Exposure to outside atmospheric conditions is required. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work.
  • Language Ability:
    Requires the ability to communicate effectively in English, including the ability to convey, record and exchange information, including receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors; requires the ability to explain procedures and to give, receive and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to speak with clarity and to articulate information to others.
  • Intelligence:
    Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving concrete variables in or from standardized situations; to perform manual labor and machine operations; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
  • Numerical Aptitude:
    Must be able to add and subtract totals. May require the ability to multiply and divide.
  • Interpersonal Temperament:
    Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be able to perform under stress when confronted with an emergency or tight deadline.
