This is a Merit System Services position.

- Carries a caseload of more difficult types of social services cases requiring a high degree of technical competence.
- Receives and responds to reports of suspected abuse; obtains information from reporters; personally investigates and assesses situations to protect vulnerable adults and children; may testify in court.
- Performs case studies, evaluates individual and family case information to assess safety and determine appropriate treatment methods.
- Develops and carries out social treatment plans for an assigned caseload, ensuring services are delivered respectfully and culturally sensitively.
- Counsels or provides guidance to individuals and families with complex or specialized needs, including Adult Protective Services, crisis intervention, and special medical or legal needs.
- Refers clients to other staff members and makes home visits as required.
- Interprets policies, rules, and regulations for clients, applicants, and others.
- May act as a lead worker to a small group of social service workers.
- Assists applicants and recipients in utilizing available resources and prepares court reports, case plans, narratives, and safety plans in automated computer systems.
- Enters and retrieves data from automated systems, maintains case documentation, and participates in in-service training.
- Works with community organizations, provides self‑help information, and maintains client confidentiality.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Pattern 1: One (1) year of full‑time experience in the Social Worker II classification within an Interagency Merit System county, OR
- Pattern 2: Two (2) years of full‑time social work case management experience in a public or private agency AND 30 semester units (or 45 quarter units) from an accredited college or university, including 15 semester units (or 22.5 quarter units) in social welfare or a related discipline.
- Pattern 3: Bachelor’s degree plus successful completion of 24 semester units (or 36 quarter units) of a master’s degree program in Social Work or a related program, and 12 months of social work case management experience.
Qualifying social work case management includes direct case work management such as assessment, investigation of abuse, court report preparation, long‑term caseload responsibility, collaboration with other agencies, and authority to impose sanctions.

- Signs, stages and dynamics of abuse and its effects on child/adult development
- Signs and symptoms of alcohol and drug use/abuse in adults and children
- Standards for maintaining clients safely in home; placement options; effects of removal from unsafe situations
