General Recruitment Information:
This recruitment will establish a list of candidates to be used in filling the vacancy as well as an eligibility list that may be used for future vacancies or temporary help for up to one year.

Description
The Del Norte County Probation Office seeks a qualified candidate to fill one vacancy for the position of Legal Clerk. This position is classified as full-time.
Bi-weekly Salary (approximate)
- Legal Clerk I: $1,483.52 - $1,803.24
- Legal Clerk II: $1,558.63 - $1,894.53
- Legal Clerk III: $1,637.54 - $1,990.44
Level I and II perform specialized and moderately complex legal clerical work and/or receptionist duties. Level III oversees and/or performs more complex legal clerical duties related to initiation, processing and recording of legal documents and may supervise or guide others.
Responsibilities- Maintain case control as it pertains to court proceedings and departmental functions.
- Prepare, file and distribute confidential reports and court documents.
- Assist in and/or prepare court documents related to courtroom presentation.
- Provide copies of investigative reports and documents used by staff in processing or prosecution of cases.
- Perform routine counter work and serve as an information source for agencies, departments, and the public.
- Transcribe opinions, pretrial orders, minute orders, jury instructions, verdicts and related legal documents.
- Coordinate transportation and lodging for witnesses when needed.
- Maintain and process unit billing records, service statements, permits, and applications.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Oversee complex legal clerical duties related to initiation, processing, and recording of documents.
- Monitor progress of legal documents through processes to ensure timely handling.
- Supervise and assist in maintenance of case control and departmental files.
- Assist in the selection and training of support staff; may assign and evaluate work.
- May perform routine counter work and handle confidential clerical tasks.
Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
- Legal Clerk I:
High school diploma or equivalent with experience in responsible office and administrative support. - Legal Clerk II:
High school diploma or equivalent with college coursework in a related field; at least 1 year of responsible clerical work, preferably with legal terminology and court procedures. - Legal Clerk III:
High school diploma with college coursework in a legal field; three years of legal setting experience including supervision of clerical personnel.
Skills and Abilities
- Legal terminology, statutory time limits, and procedures;
English grammar, spelling, and punctuation. - Modern office methods, equipment and practices.
- Level III: advanced legal writing and editing skills.
- Type legal documents rapidly (minimum 45 WPM; Level III: 55-60 WPM).
- Learn, interpret and apply policies, laws, rules and regulations.
- Perform confidential and accurate clerical work; prioritize to meet statutory deadlines.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with legal/judicial personnel and the public.
- Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- Level III: supervise staff, manage procedural office activities, and oversee case files.
