Overview
Early Childhood Teacher Assistant (per diem) at Smith Hill Early Childhood Learning Center in Providence, RI. The Per Diem Teacher Assistant is responsible for being on-call to assist the classroom teacher in supervising children to ensure their safety and well-being; providing instruction and facilitation to groups and individual children under the direction of the Teacher; and collaborating with the Teacher to assess the strengths and needs of children and design appropriate classroom activities.

Bright Stars helps families in Rhode Island access QUALITY child care, early learning, and school-age programs. We help child care providers learn about best practices in early learning and apply them to the care children receive. We recognize program quality and give parents information to make choices about their children’s care and education.
- Serve as per diem substitute teacher assistant to cover staff absences and maintain required student:teacher ratios.
- Assist the classroom teacher in planning activities for assigned groups or individual children.
- Implement the daily schedule as assigned and support instructional activities.
- Decorate the room with bulletin boards, pictures, children’s art work, and other appropriate displays.
- Serve meals and snacks; help with materials and room clean-up and organization.
- Provide a nurturing and supportive environment for children, using positive behavior interventions and preventative strategies to manage classroom behavior.
- Complete required training hours each year by attending local workshops and trainings.
- Report any special needs or problems of individual children to the classroom teacher; work with children who have special needs, supporting their developmental and behavioral characteristics.
- Report any cases of suspected child abuse and/or neglect to the Director, or directly to DCYF (1-800-RI-CHILD).
- Assist in supervising naptime, outdoor play, and toileting.
- Follow a rotating work schedule of 8 hours (plus 30 min. lunch) with the times the center is open (7:00 am – 5:30 pm).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED (required) with some college credits in early childhood, Associate’s Degree, or CDA preferred.
- At least 2 years early childhood experience preferred.
- Ability to work towards CPR & first aid certification.
