My client are a precision manufacturing business, based in Birmingham, specialising in machining and assembly of high value low volume components. The Applications Engineer will be responsible for the development and implementation of multi-axis machining processes within the machine shop. The role combines digital process development, structured verification and on-shift technical support to ensure stable, production-ready manufacturing solutions are delivered to a consistently high standard.
You will take ownership of multi-tasking mill-turn machining processes from concept through to stable production release, ensuring robust, verified and production-ready manufacturing solutions are implemented to a consistently high technical standard. The role is expected to uphold and reinforce strong technical discipline within the machining function.
Job Description Multi-Tasking Multi Axis Machining & Process Development- Develop complete machining strategies for complex mill-turn components, including operation sequencing, datum strategy, tooling selection and work holding approach.
- Create and optimise multi-axis CNC programs using CAM software.
- Ensure machining processes are stable, repeatable and production ready prior to release.
- Ensure datum control and clamping methods align with GD&T requirements.
- Support implementation of probing strategies including in-process inspection and wear compensation where appropriate.
- Perform full digital simulation and collision verification of all multi-axis machining processes using Vericut prior to shop floor release.
- Maintain high standards of simulation compliance and documentation.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of best practice in digital verification methods.
- Support machining strategy development during New Product Introduction (NPI), identifying technical risk and ensuring robust process definition prior to production release.
- Produce complete process documentation including setup sheets, tooling lists and structured release information.
- Define accurate manufacturing routings and operation time standards in collaboration with Planning.
- Provide structured prove-out support during initial production runs.
- Ensure smooth transition from development to stable production.
- Take ownership of tooling selection and troubleshooting for complex multi-axis machining operations.
- Diagnose and resolve issues relating to stability, tool life, vibration and surface integrity.
- Apply best practice in cutting strategy and machining efficiency.
- Design and implement bespoke work holding solutions to support robust machining strategies.
- Confidently interpret complex GD&T drawings.
- Provide structured manufacturability feedback to Design Engineering.
- Support technical reviews and challenge constructively where risk or inefficiency is identified.
- Identify and lead machining improvement initiatives from concept through to implementation.
- Improve process stability, reduce rework and minimise reactive intervention.
- Contribute to the long-term development of automated and lights-out machining capability.
- Experience with multi-tasking mill-turn machines (e.g. Mazak Integrex or equivalent)
- Experience using Vericut for process verification
- Proven capability developing complex multi-axis machining processes
- Solid understanding of CAM programming principles (Solid
CAM desirable) - Time-served apprenticeship in CNC / Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent practical training
