Schedule varies and candidate needs to be available for all shifts including nights, weekends and holidays. Must work a minimum of one 12‑hour shift per month to maintain eligibility as a PRN Public Safety Officer. Ideal candidates should be in school or retired.
JOB SUMMARYPerform all duties and assignments of an armed security officer and reports to and assists Sergeants, Lieutenants, Captains, and the Director with watch‑related duties and hospital security related responsibilities. Duties include, but are not limited to, standing positions, dealing with physician emergency committals, report writing, log keeping, security & parking lot patrols, escorts, and property collections. Officers will patrol the interior and exterior grounds of the hospital to protect property and to assist in providing a safe environment for all patients, visitors, physicians and employees.
Respond to all emergency situations and alert local authorities when required. Monitor vehicle and pedestrian traffic on hospital property. Monitor visitors and issue passes after hours. Assist medical staff with restraining and/or detaining specific types of hospital patients. Enforce and follow all Security and St. Tammany Health Systems’ (STHS) policies and procedures.
High school diploma or equivalent required. Must be able to read, write and follow written or oral instructions. 2+ years of armed security related experience is required. Must be certified by a state‑certified, recognized, and STPHS approved firearms, handcuffing, and/or law enforcement training entity. Must not have any felony convictions. Must own and maintain ownership of a privately owned cellular phone for emergencies and on‑call events.
Must satisfactorily complete firearm training, written tests, and qualify on the firing range. Firearms recertification must be performed annually. Must be eligible and willing to work 12‑hour shifts, day and/or night to include weekends. Must follow the Use of Force policy and all STHS procedures. Must agree to and sign off on the STHS firearm affidavit. Must have a state firearms certification.
This position requires driving a hospital‑owned vehicle and/or a personally owned vehicle to perform the essential job duties. In order to be considered, the candidate:
- Must have a valid and current state‑issued driver’s license.
- Must maintain and provide proof of automobile insurance (at his/her own expense) in amounts which meet at least the minimum liability coverage limits required by the state of their residence.
- Clearance of driving record check; driving records shall not contain any of the following: a suspended or revoked driver’s license, three or more moving violations in the past 36 months, two or more accidents in the past 36 months, one or more instances of driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) within the past 24 months, at fault in a fatal accident within the past 5 years, leaving the scene of an accident within the past 36 months, and/or reckless driving within the past 12 months.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior certification or registration with the Louisiana State Board of Private Security examiners is recommended. Prior experience as a Police Officer’s Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified law enforcement officer, federal law enforcement officer, military enforcement officer, or armed hospital security officer preferred.
