Overview

RN - Admit - Full-Time/Days - AVALA Hospital - RH415 role at AVALA

Provides care in the ambulatory setting directed towards meeting the psychosocial and physical needs of the surgical patient. Communicates with the physicians about the patient’s clinical condition regarding the planned surgical procedure. Care reflects initiative and responsibility and supports a productive, team-oriented environment. Communicates on behalf of the patient (patient advocate); care provided aligns with the mission, ethics, and goals of the facility and the department.

Responsibilities
  • Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment of all patient populations and perform reassessments per facility policy.
  • Make decisions reflecting knowledge of facts, diseases/surgical conditions, care required and good judgment. Identify physical symptoms and changes, report changes to surgeon/anesthesiologist, and initiate appropriate actions.
  • Provide care reflecting knowledge in all areas of care specific to outpatient surgery.
  • Organize and manage nursing activities with respect for the needs of the patient and their families and the needs of the hospital and staff.
  • Identify and address psychosocial needs of patients and family.
  • Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly.
  • Utilize initiative; maintain steady productivity; be a self-starter; be compatible and supportive; be a team player.
  • Follow the five medication rights and reduce potential for medication errors. Knowledge of medications and IV fluids and their correct administration, based on age and clinical condition.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform treatments and assist physicians in performing treatments/procedures. Use medical and surgical asepsis during treatments and procedures.
  • Adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilize appropriate pain management techniques. Educate patient and family regarding pain management.
  • Ensure patient care promotes safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Formulate an individualized plan of care and evaluate for effectiveness.
  • Formulate a teaching plan based on identified learning needs; include family in teaching from pre-op to discharge as appropriate.
  • Provide explanations and verbal reassurance consistently.
  • Utilize Universal Protocol (time out procedure, patient identification).
  • Ensure completion of documentation including H/P, consents, hand-off communication tool, medication administration, pre-anesthetic questionnaire, medication reconciliation form, allergies.
  • Knowledge of cardiac monitoring; identify dysrhythmias, notify physician of changes, and treat per facility protocol. Able to perform 12-lead EKG.
  • Perform waived or moderate complexity testing per clinical laboratory and unit policy; interpret results and take appropriate action on waived test results.
  • Coordinate and supervise patient care; communicate clearly to departmental charge nurse or outpatient supervisor/manager, co-workers, and physicians.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under stressful situations.
  • Treat patients and families with respect and dignity; maintain a safe and secure environment; provide good guest relations.
  • Maintain effective communication within the department and with other departments; consult as needed for interdisciplinary patient care.
  • Meet current documentation standards and policies and complete tasks within the shift.
Qualifications
  • Regulatory requirements:
    Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; current RN licensure in Louisiana; current BLS and ACLS; PALS or be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Two years nursing experience preferred.
  • Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification requirements: program staff must have eight hours of education specific to the program scope initially and annually.
  • Orientation and competency requirements within 90 days of hire or hire date.
  • Skills:

    ability to communicate effectively in English (verbal and written); basic computer knowledge; admit department experience preferred.
  • Physical Demands: position is active with lifting/carrying up to 100 pounds; frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping.
Certifications & Regulatory
  • Current RN licensure in the state; BLS, ACLS, and PALS as applicable; state-specific requirements.
