RN - OR Circulator Summary
Responsible for monitoring procedures in operating rooms during surgery. The circulator assists by acting as an intermediary between the operating room staff and the rest of the hospital.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Checks patient identification and date of birth by armband and verbally.
- Checks NPO status.
- Checks for patient allergies.
- Gathers appropriate supplies and equipment.
- Performs surgical preparation in aseptic technique.
- Performs Time Out.
- Verifies procedure and patient information.
- Makes initial assessment and determines nursing needs: assesses physical and mental status, reviews medical and surgical history, explains procedures, and notifies surgeon/anesthesiologist of findings.
- Checks patient’s medical record for completeness: verifies consents, history & physical within 30 days, reviews hand‑off form, documents accurately on OR and implant records, assists with EMR documentation, and completes a tailored Care Plan.
- Facilitates a prompt turnover of the operating room: checks the OR board for assignment, assists other staff with cleaning, maintains organized work area, prepares for upcoming assignment, secures supplies for next case, and opens supplies with surgical tech.
- Ensures safety and comfort of patients: keeps side rails up, provides warm blankets, locks wheels, positions patient safely with straps and aids, applies return electrode, documents condition post‑op, troubleshoots equipment, and maintains DVT prophylaxis with SCDs.
- Observes and monitors the environment for risks: reports potential risks and equipment malfunctions.
- Performs competently in emergency situations: remains calm, utilizes emergency equipment, stays current on practices.
- Maintains preference cards and accurately keys patient charges: reviews charge sheet, makes necessary changes, charges appropriate items, verifies outside vendor supplies.
- Maintains supplies and orders necessary items: takes initiative for new surgeon, rotates stock, checks expiration dates, communicates special supply requests, participates in inventory and reprocessing programs, assists with orientation of new staff, and performs other duties as assigned.
- Supervises the daily operation of the OR: coordinates staff and room assignments, ensures equipment and supplies are available, ensures timely start of procedures, communicates with surgeons, anesthesia, and staff, coordinates breaks, expedites turnovers, observes supply handling, supports vendor policy, reports to director, and assists with staff orientation and evaluations.
- Meets dress code standards and adheres to policy on Attire in the Operating Room.
- Completes annual education requirements.
- Maintains regulatory requirements.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
- Wears identification while on duty and uses the computerized punch‑time system correctly.
- Completes in‑services and returns in a timely fashion.
- Attends annual review and departmental in‑services as scheduled.
- Attends monthly staff meetings or reads minutes.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the department’s focus statement.
- Promotes professional growth of subordinates by sharing knowledge or directing them to appropriate resources.
- Assists other staff members in performing any duty that enhances patient care.
- OR experience preferred.
- Program direct‑care staff must complete at least eight (8) hours of education specific to the program scope initially and at least annually thereafter.
- Staff must demonstrate adaptability to processes, best practices, collaboration, compliance with protocols, and exceptional customer service.
- Within 90 days of hire, complete orientation, program education requirements, and department‑specific competencies.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Current state Registered Nurse licensure in Louisiana.
- Current BLS certification.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Basic computer knowledge.
The position is very active and requires repetitive motions, standing, walking, bending, kneeling and stooping throughout the day. The employee must frequently lift or move items weighing up to 100 pounds.
