Substitute Teaching – Provide face‑to‑face instruction in school buildings, ensuring continuity of learning during teacher absences. Substitute Teachers perform duties as needed, on‑call and assigned based on operational needs.
This training workshop is the final substitute training for the 2025‑2026 School Year.
Performance Responsibilities- Report in person to the school building to provide face‑to‑face instruction to students.
- Respond to changing school and district instructional needs.
- Deliver classroom instruction based on lesson plans left by the teacher or provided by the school.
- Create a learning environment conducive to students’ maturity and interests.
- Maintain a safe and orderly environment.
- Follow the established routine of the school and classroom procedures as directed.
- Maintain a professional appearance in accordance with the substitute handbook.
- Remain at school the entire day unless otherwise instructed to leave by the principal.
- Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain reasonable rules of conduct that encourage self‑discipline and responsibility.
- Communicate effectively with parents as needed.
- Meet and instruct assigned classes in designated locations and times.
- Monitor students in the classroom, at lunch, and throughout the school to maintain order and discipline.
- Perform other duties assigned by the building principal.

- To join the pool of qualified substitute teachers, meet one of the following criteria:
- Hold a current teaching certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GA PSC).
- Be eligible for a GA PSC teaching certificate.
- Hold a Substitute Teacher certificate of completion from the Griffin RESA Substitute Training Workshop.
If you meet the criteria above, you are exempt from attending Substitute Training. However, you must complete the following steps (steps 2‑5 are completed after training):
- Online Application: Apply to the “Substitute Teacher Training” job posting.
- Required Documents: Submit the necessary "Substitute Required Documents." Visit our website for the full list.
- Fingerprinting Appointment: Schedule an appointment. Email Ms. Foster a.ga.us with your GA PSC certificate number to receive the scheduling link.
- Fingerprinting and Payroll Packet: At your appointment, complete the payroll packet and return the ½‑day observation form. Bring two forms of (e.g., a driver's license or passport, plus a birth certificate or social security card). Fingerprinting is by appointment only, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
- Long‑term Substitute Vacancies: Contact the Human Resources Department for information on long‑term substitute teaching vacancies and eligibility.
If you do not meet the above criteria, follow these steps:
- Online Application: Apply to the “Substitute Teacher” job posting.
- Training Registration: Register for training via Event Brite (link sent one week before training) or for Griffin RESA’s substitute training.
- Complete Training: Successfully complete the substitute training workshop (NCS or Griffin RESA).
- Transcript Submission: Submit an official transcript for the highest level of education completed. Use Parchment Services for secure orders; transcripts must be sent directly to hrdept.ga.us. Unofficial transcripts will not be accepted.
- School Observation: Schedule and complete a ½ day – full day school observation and have the principal sign the Observation Form (for Griffin RESA training, obtain the form from HR).
- Fingerprinting Appointment: After the observation, schedule a fingerprinting appointment. If you attended Griffin RESA training, email a copy of your certificate to Ms. Foster for the scheduling link. For NCS training, the link will be sent via a follow‑up email after training.

Salary: $90 to $165 per day
* Retired NCS teachers with a teaching certificate working in a long‑term teaching assignment can earn $165 per day.
** Certified teachers accepting a long‑term teaching assignment can earn $150 per day.
