Substitute Teaching
SUBSTITUTES provide face-to-face instruction with students in school buildings and ensure continuity of appropriate learning during the absence of the teacher. Substitute Teachers perform related duties in lieu of the absent teacher or in a class that does not have an assigned teacher. This position is on-call and assigned based on operational needs.
Please note... you will not receive any additional correspondence regarding Substitute Training until a few days prior to the training date. You will be directed to register for training via Event Brite. Space is limited and registration closes once capacity is reached. No further action is required at this time.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Report in person to the school to provide face-to-face instruction to students.
- Respond to changing instructional needs of the school and district.
- Provide classroom instruction based on lesson plans left by the classroom teacher or provided by the school.
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning, appropriate to students' maturity and interests.
- Maintain a safe and orderly environment.
- Follow established routines and procedures as directed.
- Maintain a professional appearance and adhere to the substitute handbook guidelines.
- Remain at school for the entire school day unless instructed otherwise by the principal.
- Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain reasonable rules of conduct to encourage self-discipline and responsibility.
- Communicate effectively with parents as needed.
- Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated locations and times.
- Monitor students in the classroom, during lunch, and throughout the school to maintain order and discipline.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
Newton County Schools (NCS) Substitute Teacher Application Process for :
Application Period: August through March
Qualifications:
- Hold a current teaching certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GA PSC), or
- Be eligible for a GA PSC teaching certificate, or
- Hold a Substitute Teacher certificate of completion from Griffin RESA Substitute Training Workshop.
If you meet the above criteria, you are exempt from attending Substitute Training. You must complete the following steps (steps 2-5 are after training):

* Retired NCSS teachers with a teaching certificate working in long-term assignments can earn $165/day.
** Certified teachers accepting long-term assignments can earn $150/day.
