Position: Substitute Teacher Training (In-Person) - August 18, 2025

Substitute Teaching

SUBSTITUTES provide face-to-face instruction with students in school buildings and ensure continuity of appropriate learning during the absence of the teacher. Substitute Teachers perform related duties in lieu of the absent teacher or in a class that does not have an assigned teacher. This position is on-call and assigned based on operational needs.

Please note... you will not receive any additional correspondence regarding Substitute Training until a few days prior to the training date. You will be directed to register for training via Event Brite. Space is limited and registration closes once capacity is reached. No further action is required at this time.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Report in person to the school to provide face-to-face instruction to students.
  • Respond to changing instructional needs of the school and district.
  • Provide classroom instruction based on lesson plans left by the classroom teacher or provided by the school.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning, appropriate to students' maturity and interests.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly environment.
  • Follow established routines and procedures as directed.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and adhere to the substitute handbook guidelines.
  • Remain at school for the entire school day unless instructed otherwise by the principal.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain reasonable rules of conduct to encourage self-discipline and responsibility.
  • Communicate effectively with parents as needed.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated locations and times.
  • Monitor students in the classroom, during lunch, and throughout the school to maintain order and discipline.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.

Newton County Schools (NCS) Substitute Teacher Application Process for :

Application Period: August through March

Qualifications:

  • Hold a current teaching certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GA PSC), or
  • Be eligible for a GA PSC teaching certificate, or
  • Hold a Substitute Teacher certificate of completion from Griffin RESA Substitute Training Workshop.

If you meet the above criteria, you are exempt from attending Substitute Training. You must complete the following steps (steps 2-5 are after training):

  • Online Application: Apply to the “Substitute Teacher Training” job posting.
  • Required Documents: Submit the necessary "Substitute Required Documents". Visit our website for the full list.
  • Fingerprinting Appointment: Schedule an appointment for fingerprinting. Email Ms. Foster a.ga.us with your GA PSC certificate number to receive the scheduling link.
  • Fingerprinting and Payroll Packet: Complete the payroll packet and return the ½ day observation form at your fingerprinting appointment. Bring two IDs (e.g., driver’s license or passport plus birth certificate or social security card). Fingerprinting is by appointment only, Monday-Thursday, 8:30 AM–4:00 PM. No walk-ins.
  • Long-term Substitute Vacancies: If you have a teaching certificate and are not under contract, contact Human Resources for long-term substitute opportunities.
  • If you do not meet the above criteria, follow these steps:

  • Online Application: Apply to the “Substitute Teacher” job posting.
  • Training Registration: Register for training via Event Brite if attending NCS training (link sent one week prior) or Griffin RESA training.
  • Complete Training: Complete the substitute training workshop (NCS or Griffin RESA).
  • Transcript Submission: Request and submit an official transcript via Parchment Services, sent directly to teachnewton.ga.us. No unofficial or hand-delivered transcripts accepted.
  • School Observation: Schedule and complete a ½ or full-day observation, with principal’s signature on the form (pick up from HR if Griffin RESA).
  • Fingerprinting Appointment: After observation, schedule fingerprinting. For Griffin RESA, email your certificate to Ms. Foster for the link. For NCS, the link will be sent after training.
  • Fingerprinting and Payroll Packet: Complete the payroll packet and return the observation form at your fingerprinting appointment. Bring two IDs. Appointment only, Monday-Thursday, 8:30 AM–4:00 PM.

    * Retired NCSS teachers with a teaching certificate working in long-term assignments can earn $165/day.
