Howard Dalton Centre funded project:
Deconstructing energised associations that build and maintain the Gram-negative Bacterial Cell Envelope
What scientific question will you investigate? / Outline of the project aims
You will join the Webby group in the School of Life Sciences at Warwick University. We are a diverse group of interdisciplinary scientists who investigate the molecular mechanisms that underpin cell envelope maintenance in Gram-negative bacteria. Our research focuses on understanding how protein complexes assemble and cooperate to preserve the three-layered cell envelope structure, a process that is essential for bacterial survival.
This work has broad implications for our understanding of bacterial physiology and the identification of novel therapeutic targets.
As part of the team, you will support research by providing technical assistance across a wide range of experimental areas, including molecular biology, bacterial microbiology, and protein expression and purification. Your work will span multiple projects and contribute to downstream biochemical and biophysical analyses. You will collaborate closely with postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and external partners, including structural biologists, microbiologists, and biochemists.
In addition, you will help ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the lab. This will include responsibilities such as training new lab members, maintaining inventories, ordering consumables, and ensuring the group remains compliant with relevant health and safety regulations.
About the research group:

We are based at the Gibbet Hill Campus, a vibrant research environment within the University of Warwick. Our lab is ideally located with direct access to media preparation facilities, cryo-EM infrastructure, fluorescence imaging microscopes, and a wide network of researchers with expertise in cell envelope biology, microbiology, and structural biology.
We and the wider University of Warwick environment offer substantial opportunities for professional development including regular opportunities to attend international conferences.

About You
We are looking for a candidate with expertise in molecular biology techniques, including cloning, mutagenesis, and expression screening, as well as protein purification of both soluble and membrane proteins using affinity and size-exclusion chromatography.
We also welcome applications from individuals with a strong background in microbiology, particularly those experienced in sterile technique and bacterial cell culture.
Applicants should hold a laboratory-based research Master’s degree (or have equivalent hands-on experience) in a relevant subject area such as biochemistry, biological sciences, or a related field.
Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude are essential. You should be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
